Perhaps too much time exposed to model airplane glue fumes! Even the bar keep had a pained expression near the first part - the part I thought would reveal the skis. Got me too rossf! Mike  PS: It is easy to see we need snow!! :D |

Yeah Hamish :!:  I agree with Dave Mac :D So what do you have against some good ole' dry ice skiing? Beats the dry slope thing, I expect. With atmospheric pressure and gravitational differences, it could be the challenge we need to bring about more appreciation of what we have here. Niederau, Whistler, Sunday River or even Martock... And we may have had the need to invent a new type of ski --- the rocket skis  Don't write Mars off yet guys :!: Mike  |

The mission scientists are not the only ones excited with the hopes that some of the snow will make to to the ground
I expect the lift pass cost would be "out of this world" :D But like tino points out, wouldn't it be a blast to ski & jump in that gravity - or lack of it  I wonder if Pavel's son can arrange a Bombardier jet for the trip :?: Just sooo exciting..... Mike  |

Guess we had better save travel dollars, pounds and euros for an excursion to Mars.

Rose, For an off topic reply ... :D As "rustyinn" Dave suggests you need to use skates you are used to. Also be sure you have strong support in the ankles. Broken down skates will offer you nothing but problems and shin splints. Without a feeling of "a solid grip" of the ice due to dull or non supportive skates you will become tense and the shins will burn. No fun in that :!: Make sure the skates are sharp ... dull skates will guarantee a fall. I used to use hockey skates which have lots of rocker (on the blade) but in recent years have moved to figure skates. Now and then I might try the hockey skates only to find that I can't stand up very well. The stance in the figure skates is completely different. They have a heel  Even times when I miss a few weeks without skating it takes about 30 minutes to get the feel back. If you have or plan to use figure skates please don't have the picks removed. You will get used to them. But also don't use them for pushing off. Push back and out from the ball of your foot (using the inside edges) in a relaxed manner. Left foot - right foot .... The most likely reason you are having difficulty with skating is that you are not relaxing and may be keeping your knees stiff. Maintain soft - flexed knees. I know it is said that if you skate, you can ski! I'm not sure if it goes the other way or not. But like everything, it is all in the practice we put in to develop a skill. In my case, I generally take time on Fridays for about 2 hours skating with the "lucky retired people". Be careful and have fun  The ice is harder than the snow. Mike  |

Wouldn't it be nice to have known then, what we know now. Mike  |
