Getting fit for skiing
Started by NellyPS in Ski Fitness, 510 Replies, discussing Tignes and Val Thorens
How does everyone prepare themselves for skiing? I was once told that the only exercise worth doing to get fit for skiing was skiing itself but I don't actually believe that.

I hate the gym but love swimming, I also love walking my dog, but will this be enough?

Just curious to know if anyone spends the 3 months prior to their holiday doing anything in particular to get prepared.

Are you still living in one of those underground caves? I've got one of the newer sort, built on top of the ground, with walls about 2 1/2 feet thick and these things you can see through called windows, which are really great because they bring a lot of light into the cave. Unfortunately though, the roof isn't very thick and a lot of heat from the fire escapes through it. So I'm trying to do something about it.

I fixed the door problem, by having 2 doors. It's quite ingenious really, because you only open one door at a time so the wind doesn't whistle into the cave. And there's room to stand in between the 2 doors in the dry, while you put your welly boots on.

Sounds like my cave, except I need extra ceiling height to accommodate my enormous head.

I think you need a certain sense of humour for Shooting Stars, and I find it very amusing. I loved it first time round too, particularly George, he's just a great big baby - the start of things to come for Matt Lucas back then.
Espace Killy lift pass

Does anyone know if you can still get a discount on a lift pass by taking your old lift pass back to Espace Killy?

When I was there a few years ago I remember reading that when you return and took an old lift pass with you they would give you a discount but I don't know if this is still applicable.

Anyone?

On a more serious note, I've been totally hooked on anything World War II for the last week, started off with Valkyrie, followed by The Pianist (I know they're both films, just bear with me) and this week we got stuck into Band of Brothers which was AMAZING and have been recording the WWII in colour which I think is BBC2.

Sorry.

If you like light reading, then a great way to get the big picture of WW2, is to read Herman Wouk's "Winds of war" and "War and rememberance). A romantic story is weaved through nearly all the major events and people of the war, giving a great appreciation of the war's scope and complexity. There are some historical notes in the books, but you you don't need to read them for the story. Don't watch a video of the mini-series, it was @$#@.
