We are a young at heart mature group of skiers. 40-50 yrs all of which can get about over most terrains. Been to Schladming numerous times, a hidden gem which is only just over an hour coach from Salzburg. It has its own station which goes direct to Salzburg. Excellent sking spolit for choice where to eat and drink. Apres is quite timid and not a big Brit/Irish resort but better for it. Went to Soll last year in late January, the snow was great and the Apres was more catered towards the Brit/Irish. We had a ball. Recommend both.

Been to both. Went to Soll last year and had such a good time going back there this season. Mayrhofen was great town, great skiing but really found the queing to go up and DOWN the main gondolla a massive chore. Been to numerous places in Austria and will continue to do so and for the reason previously stated I would not return to Mayrhofen unless it was a bargain.

Scladming is a fine range and you can opt to say at one of the quieter feeder villages to the area. Not a massive British presence there and maybe desribed as not being the liveliest area for Apres. The skiing is first class and the lift system is very good and getting upgraded each year. Spoilt for choice where to eat and drink on the mountains.

Innsbruck is getting used more each season and although I have been alright, I thinks it far more prone to be effected by bad weather than Salzburg. Salzburg airport is only a 5-10 taxi ride or 20 min tram from Salzburg railway station. There are a load of resorts which are less than 90 minutes train ride away. On top of that depending where you go alot of resorts have bus/coach shuttle services to Salzburg airport, but these tend to be timetabled around German inbound flights.

Its horses for courses!
If its just the skiing in wonderous locations and conditions then many will say France but alas you need a kings ransom if you want to eat and drink and thats before you start thinking about DRINKING. I have found the whole Austrian package has suited my groups needs over the years. Good skiing, facilities, instruction, hospitality and in this day and age moderately priced Apres etc. I have had rude service in both France and Austria but in no more proportion than I have recieved at home. I am a great believer in that you reap what you sow, if you treat folk as 'servants' then unless you tip handsomely you will get what you deserve. Old habits die hard with me in that when i arrive on any holiday I put myself out on the first meeting with bar staff, waiters etc to be helpfull and polite to them and in return I have always found that they remember that thereafter when they are busy. Austria gets my vote. |

Have to say I thought the critism of the runs marking to be abit extreme. We were in a group of mostly 50+s and yes we can all get about down most torrains sometimes I accept with not alot of tecnique, but we explored and found our way around with no trouble apart from one confusing bit which I cannot remember the location of. Hey ho each to their own.
