That's madness.

With windchill I skied in -35c in Zermatt. It was quite shocking, I think that my body knew it did not belong there. 1st time I'd worn 2 pairs of LJ's. I chatted to a guy who'd got Frostbite on his face, he was skiing in shades. His face on one side was really swollen and discoloured.

His mates, all from Zurich, though it was amusing

Take a daypack, and put in an extra fleece, just in case. Glove liners (silk or thermal) will be important, as will a balaclava.
Take a coffee and warm up break every hour :D I found I didn't shiver in Zermatt, but I could feel that I was getting colder, and moving stiffly.

I think I can sense a few duvet days coming on!

NellyPS wrote:SB can you speak French? That's one of my concerns, even though I worked several seasons my French is shocking.

Mr Nelly is as keen as me to make the move but my concern would be the summers, I know they survive but the work would be minimal.

His kids are still at school so it's not an option at the moment but I'm seriously considering a few options and also doing a French course so we can make the move in a few years.

Interesting thread though, makes me want to do it more :)

My french is getting better, but I would definitely not say that I speak french! I'm lucky in many ways as being a UK trained teacher there is work for me almost anywhere. Teaching however is not what I want to do forever, but it is good back up!

Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I think about is how I am going to get out here for good and what I'm going to do when I'm here...Even though we've done little more than spend two seasons practicing and looking in estate agents windows, just having made the decision that we are going to do it, makes me feel very excited. :D
ADH Tunnel, how difficult is it?

smartski wrote:Nice to say I've done it, the conditions were great and only about 6 people on it...but I'm sure I still didn't look pretty!

You could always pole back out the tunnel again if it looks anything like this one...

not my vid, but watch from about 4:20min you get an idea of how steep.

Am I alone in thinking that most of the people in that video should not have been on a slope like that. It didn't look like much skiing was going on. I'm suprised there was only one man down during those 5 or so minutes.

Drove through Les Gets today and thought about stopping for dinner. Not knowing about any of the restaurants there we decided to go somewhere in Morzine where we knew we would get something good.

Nice to have a recommendation for future reference!

Iceman wrote:Hmmm, there must be 2? Because we used to meet up at the Yeti after a day in Avoriaz?

EDIT: From the link that Helen provided:

"Avoriaz - The Yeti - a must. Crepes and daily soup (with a chunk of cheese and bread. Bargain fare."

The Yeti bars are a chain...I think.

Morzine:

- Mama's for good value and very good quality. Everything is 10 euros, burger/homemade chips, battered cod/homemade chips, Pizza's noodles and all sorts. I have had more or less everything on the menu and will recommend it all highly.

- L'Etale for consisitenly good food at average prices for French ski resort. Traditionl Savoyard fayre, fish dishes, steaks, pizzas etc. Been there today and it's not bad at all.

- Le Chaudanne for slightly more up market, but with reasonable set menu's starting at 18 euros - Very good food IMO

- Le Grange, is my favourite. Very good menu and reasonable prices. Nice atmosphere.

There are many more and as for mountain restaurants/cafes I think they are all much of a muchness really. One of our favourite is the cafe closest to the top of the Ardent bubble. It usually has a great atmosphere with an ice bar and music/band/dj's outside. The cafe at the top of the swiss wall is another favourite...Really good choice of snacks, crepes or cooked meals and I haven't been disappointed yet!

There is a restaurant in the goat village that is superb but I can't remember it's name...I'll try to find out.

The best restaurant that I have been to is called Les Cornettes, but it is in Chapelle D' Abondance, you would need to drive in the evening or you can ski there at lunch. It is definitely worth the effort...I'll definitely be going back there!
