There's snow in Val D'Isere this morning. 61 Days and counting. :-)

Buying Own Boots

Yes, buy your own boots. Boots that fit properly will instantly improve your skiing.

Go somewhere with plenty of choice and get them properly fitted.
Blades

When skis were long and straight, blades were a super fun. But with short shaped skis, blades are redundant.
Quite honestly anything you can do on blades, you should be able to do on skis.
Andorra vs. Austria (for ski holiday)

They are having a laugh at 220 Euros for the lift pass though Jonah690. Andorra used to be a good option for those on a budget, no longer.
Great if all you want easy cruising but there's nothing to challenge even a mid intermediate.
A distinct whiteness.
Early skiing?

I've been to Val D'Isere/Tignes most years for that past decade, second full week in Dec.
Not once have we had poor snow. We've lost a days skiing due to heavy snowfall (1.5M in 24hrs) closing the area!
We also had to put up with a strike closing most of the runs for 3 days!
But generally speaking we've had wonderful skiing.

Each to their own.

I probably need to give it another go, it's been a few years since we were last there. To be fair Les Gets was great, superb snow and a lovely place to ski, great off piste. But getting from Morzine to Avoriaz was an absolute pain.
I didn't find Avoriaz worth the hassle to be quite honest. Nor did I think the linked areas in Switzerland were up to much.
It rained quite a bit in Morzine, luckily it only effected the lower slopes and up high the powder was great.

My short list of French areas would be:
3 Valleys
Espace Killy
Alpe D'Huez/Les Deux Alpe/La Grave
Paradiski
Milky Way
Morzine or Val Thorens

We always go off peak, (26 big group holidays in the past 12 years) it's the only place that I'd say queues have been a issue.
I'd rather not ski than go at half term!
I don't know how much the lift system has been improved since I was last there but at the time it was years behind 3Vs.
