If I was choosing a ski area to move to, Porte du Soleil wouldn't even make my short list.

Best of both worlds! |

I think there are a number of issues here, yes the state of the economy has had a huge effect on the ski holiday industry. However I think some have used it as an excuse while a few have seized the opportunity to examine their offering and move forward.
Some operators have been really lazy and simply cut numbers and given their customers less choice. The company I use for all of our group trips have not sat back, they have looked at every aspect of what they do and worked really hard to improve customer service. Not that it was bad before, but in the last 2 or 3 years the food, professionalism of the staff and customer service has gone from very good to great. It must be working as they are increasing the number of properties available not decreasing like most of their competition. Make sure Ski World are on your list when looking for your next holiday. |

How about Orelle, it's got a lift straight up into Val Thorens area. So your commute would be via a lift and a couple of runs.
http://www.orelle.net/index.php?page=slopes_map_orelle_val_thorens It's 1hr15 from Grenoble and going the other way 1hr20 away from Val D'Isere. No idea what property prices are like but I suspect they will be low compared to some other parts of 3 valleys. |

I prefer a less energetic pursuit, though it doesn't do the ski fitness any good at all!

Firstly go back to Espace Killy in better conditions because you're right in thinking the off piste is out of this world.
For a mixed group I'd always recommend Alpe D'Huez. If a resort was designed for groups Alpe D'Huez would be it, it's got something for everyone. How many in the group? |

If you look at the package route, give Ski World a look, of all the companies we've used they are easily the best.
