I have found that most of the lift in Austria are more modern than any I have been on in France and as freezywater says there are the odd few were the ski schools are

I have thought about this...London to Grand Massif is 720 miles (my preferred route) which costs £90 in fuel each way plus ferry (£50-£100 ) and about a day to drive so with 2 up about £150 each return.

Against that Flight £100 skis £35 airport parking £25 transfers £65 = £210

then the saving you make in not having to buy food in the resort (bring it with or go to the hypermarket and I might not have to get up at 2 am to get to the airport and of course the flexibility of being able to go to different places and go for say 8 days instead of the prescribed 6

But Flaine itself is an awful place ...60s concrete that needs a refurb..The prices slope side are HORRENDOUS €3.2 for a packet of walkers crisps and €4 for a coffee..The skiing is good if you like pistes but les Carroz or Morrillon are a lot more friendly and I quite liked Samoens

Where's best early season?

Obertuern is snow sure usually the week before Xmas..(been twice)and some hotels offer inclusive of lift pass for that week.. The runs are quite varied but it is mainly above the tree line and its mostly ski out and in from the hotel door

no such thing as cheap transfers in France...this one is better though ...about on a par with what I paid last year

Austria is usually cheaper for transfers but try Samoens on The Grand Massif

Its oK for 2 or 3 definitely CROWDED for 5..and you might be able to get in at your price..especially in Jan..and the Skiing is excellent
