I assume all UK airport security points adhere to the same laws/guidelines. Speaking to the airport before I flew last year they said ski boots were allowed through security.

Security states one bag only, that can fit through the scanner. Not how heavy it can be.

Weight and size restrictions (below scanner size) are put in place by the airlines. These are stated on their 'terms and conditions' pages. Past this it seems like you're dealing with the whim of the airline's instructions to the check in agents that day.

I'd like to see how someone challenging the boot restriction, where they fitted into scanner size and were below cabin baggage weight limits, got on. A written communication. The airlines are screwing us every way they can and it seems to tale a lot of loud complaints before anything actually changes.

Ship your boots and luggade to your destination and escape the hassle. Carry nothing. It's liberating.

I rang thomson and asked what can go in my board/ski bag they said I can out what I want in it including boots helmet etc as long as it didnt weigh over 26kg when I booked at thomson travel agents for my ski/board carriage they said I can only put in ski/board and helmet nothing else ans that boots had to go in main luggage not even hand luggage any one else travleing with thomson. I am going on a crystal holiday but traveling with thomson on 29th to seefeld austria.

in answer to boots weighing exactly 5kg don't put them in a bag who said your hand luggage has to be in a bag lol
Now I am REALLY confused about flying with Thomsons
What did Thomson actually tell you, as its unclear from your post/text ?
Are you saying your ski bag can weigh up to 26kg, as thats totally new to me?
Only BA let you take a ski bag which weighs up to 23kg without anyone querying it as far as I know.
In the past I have taken a ski bag packed with all sorts, which is why I bought a double one, and it usually weighs around 18kg, so is inside the single baggage weight limit for health and safety (23kg I believe) but is well over what it appears some airlines are now allowing.
I've read some insist on ONE PAIR OF SKIS OR 1 SNOWBOARD - does this mean they will ask everyone to open the bags to check whats inside at check in and risk delaying the flight?
Are they actually weighing each individual ski bag and charging anyone who is over the alleged limit?

This really is now getting messy, and still no one appears to be able to come out and clearly state what each airline allows in terms of weight and size when it comes to ski carriage.

Apart from BA who charge £56 return for an additional bag up t-o 23kg checked in online in advance.

Help????

Just to confuse things more, I lifted this from the thomsonski website just now:

"Carriage of skis/snowboards and boots by air: With a growing number of skiers and snowboarders taking their own equipment on holiday, charter airlines are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the extra weight and handling of these items. This has increased the risk of luggage being off-loaded from aircraft. In common with all other major winter sports operators, we have therefore introduced a system to improve the reliability of ski/snowboard carriage, at a cost of £30 per pair of skis/snowboard carried (max one set off skis/board per £30 charge made). The ski & snowboard bag must contain the pair of skis or snowboard only.
If you wish to have skis or snowboards added to your booking, these must be registered at the time of booking and if they should fail to arrive on your flight, the charge will be refunded and skis forwarded to you in resort free of charge. We will also provide superior skis for your use until your skis arrive. If you do not pre-book your skis/board carriage, there is no guarantee that they will be carried, but if accepted, a minimum £40 charge will be levied at the check-in desk by an appointed rep. This charge does not apply to scheduled airlines, unless operating as a charter, where ski equipment may be included in the total baggage allowance and additional charges may be levied if this is exceeded. Please note ski/snowboard boots contribute to the overall luggage allowance."

No mention whatsoever about weight or size limits, despite the mention of 1 pair of skis.

What are this company playing at?

Hi Tony, nice to see you back :D

I think what Thomsons mean is that you have to pay £30 for each pair of skis or each snowboard, and you have to book ahead to be sure of getting your skis/board on the plane.

I copied in another bit off the Thomson website (page 1 of this thread near the bottom) which said that their hand luggage limit is only 5 Kg and this includes the weight of a handbag or similar item. I weighed my ski boots and they were exactly 5 Kg but someone else said (couldn't find it on their website) that ski boots are not allowed in hand luggage.

The hold luggage limit is 20 Kg but you can pay for the extra 3 Kg to get up to the maximum weight of 23 Kg per item with only 1 bag/suitcase.

So, I reckon anyone flying with Thomson carrying skis and boots would have to pay the extra £30 for the skis and probably also pay for the extra 3 Kg hold luggage to allow for the boots because otherwise I think it would be a job to carry all the gear one needs on a ski holiday.

The rip off train keeps rolling, my suggestion would be is to see what you can get away with, BA wanted to charge me for ski boots, so I put them in my ski bag which now contained two pairs of skis and poles and two pairs of boots. They did not even bother to weigh the ski bag they just tagged it and I took it to Large baggage ...... perhaps they heard about my one man campaign against the Irish lot .....
