Hey Verbier, in the context of the conversation it was a remark about the run down into Val d I'sere being very narrow and being a blue, when it was closer to a black run. The gent stated that "all resorts have a blue run down for some resort rating even if it isn't really a blue run". Just didn't make sense as I thought the ratings were % based on gradient and width. Not "ooh, we need our resort to be friendlier to beginners, slap a blue on that run, sorted"

Cheers

In short no.
I'm off to Kreischberg on Sunday & the run to the bottom is black. Those who don't want to ski it can get the bubble back down.

The blue down into Ardent (Portes Du Soleil) also turns into a mogul field at times.

The drop to El Tarter gives a choice between blue or black. (possibly a green as well)

I guess the shape of the mountain determines what grade of run can be made. It's nice for weaker skiers to be able to ski down at the end of a day - rather than feel they've wimped out - or even worse come a cropper skiing a run beyond their ability.

I'm sure we would all hope that they grade the run honestly so that all skiers can decide what they ski rather than end up on a blue that should have been graded red.

Sometimes there is no option but to go down in the lift as the runs don't go down to the car park! (or the lower snow has mented)

Agreed, That run down from Tignes had people laid waste all over the shop.

Way too narrow to be a blue. They had a similar sort of run down at St Anton, got silly busy near the end of the day but that was a red run less steep but wider, go figure :).

Which blue run are we talking about in Val d'isere? I was there a few weeks ago and the green run (Verte) from Bellevarde down to La Daille was horrendous - on the last day when I was too tired I chose to take the black Face down to Val. It was an absolute joke.

I don't think there is any doubt that Val D'isere have just labelled a handful of runs as blue and green to get people there - unlikely that people will return though if they are nervous skiers and have no confidence at the start of a rain they haven't done before.
Bon. Allez!

The green run down to La Daille is mental - give me "orange" or "ok" anyday!

I haven't been to VDI, so don't know what the runs are like there. generally, blue, red and black ratings are relative to a particular mountain or ski area, they are not some sort of objective standard. So blue in one resort could technically be a black somewhere else. It can also be that the agent got colours confused . in certain light conditions black may look like blue;)

I can guarantee if you go down a black thinking it's a blue, you will be black AND blue yourself by the time you reach the bottom

I believe that the run under discussion in Val D'Isere is "Santons". It is a blue, however because it's narrow, it's normally crowded with nervous skiers making tight turns, before falling over with the sheer stress of surviving intact as far as the village. Saying it's busy is an understatement.
