Tony_H wrote:Thanks for all the suggestions. Its just me and the Mrs, and we are going out on Dec 26th, and returning either 31st or Jan 1st depending on cost and availability. I have been looking into car hire, which isnt cheap taking into account its just the 2 of us, so no one to share it with. However, it is still working out cheaper to hire a car than to take public transport or transfers from the airports in general. I was looking at Geneva and resorts around there, but have ended up with flights to Munich, car hire, and some very cheap accommocation in Mayrhofen. Nothing booked yet, as I am still exploring other possibilities, but at least I now have something possible to fall back on. The short break is turning into 6 days!!!!!

How I envy you, its my dream to be away at xmas or new year, but my contract of employment is no annual holidays for the whole of December and first week of jan. :(

Rose, I can think of some advantages of avoiding December and early January, lack of daylight and peak holiday prices being two that first spring to mind.
On the downside, by working through, you get to deal with all the snivelling brats that are sickly over the school holidays

After that ordeal, you deserve a ski holiday :D

I can deal with the snivelling brats, its their mothers I cant stand. Plus it would get us out of having to spend every Xmas with the outlaws, sorry mean inlaws. Still we get away as soon as first week of Jan out th way

Having done both early and late season, I see the merits in both. I have been away twice for Xmas, but never for new year, as I really cant justify the prices and dont like skiing when its packed. I have never been at Feb half term and dont intend to for exactly the same reasons.

What I love about late March is the light evenings, sunshine and sopradic dumps of snow, and its nicer to ski wearing less, if you see what I am saying!

However, Xmas was lovely when we did it, very festive and pretty. Again, lucky that we had cold weather and fresh snow to make it perfect, as well as lovely sunny days on the slopes.

However, I do find early Jan the best time to go, as its always quieter on the mountains, and the prices are at their lowest of the season generally. Of all the times going in January, I have had good snow and lovely sunny weather. I do however like being able to ski as late as possible - 5.30pm in Verbier in March was not uncommon, and to be able to sit out with a pint in the sun after a full days skiing.

Apologies, I was planning from Geneva. I must read more carefully in future.

No No No, you are fine. I CAN fly into Geneva, and I was hoping for suggestions based on Geneva, Munich, Zurich, Milan and Turin. I have not booked any flights just yet. Bandit stands corrected.
