Tony

A couple of ideas that might help you narrow down your choice:

- have a close look at flights times and try to get very early flights out and late flights back - on a short trip, you should ideally be trying to get in some skiing on arrival and/or departure day to maximise skiing to travel time ratio;

- given the preceding point, you might want to think twice about relying on public transport - the last thing you want to is spend a big chunk of your trip hanging around the airport or train/bus stations waiting for trains or buses. You are also very vulnerable if your flight is delayed. Accordingly, you might want to consider car hire instead (inexpensive if there are a few of you going). This can also widen your choice of resorts, as you can get away from the limitations of public transport.

Good luck with your plans.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Its just me and the Mrs, and we are going out on Dec 26th, and returning either 31st or Jan 1st depending on cost and availability. I have been looking into car hire, which isnt cheap taking into account its just the 2 of us, so no one to share it with. However, it is still working out cheaper to hire a car than to take public transport or transfers from the airports in general. I was looking at Geneva and resorts around there, but have ended up with flights to Munich, car hire, and some very cheap accommocation in Mayrhofen. Nothing booked yet, as I am still exploring other possibilities, but at least I now have something possible to fall back on. The short break is turning into 6 days!!!!!

That'll be a nice change for you then

Ref somewhere cheap betweeen 26th Dec and first week January....
Myself and two other girlies (I'm almost old enough to be mummy ...) have bagged a triple room at the Staffler for £180 each, half board. We're driving down on 27th for the week.
However, before now, i've travelled on my own and have met up with friends when I've arrived. I've telephoned Angela at the tourist office in Oberau beforehand and have booked a bed and breakfast direct with one of the many, friendly, very clean and can't-do-enough for you private householders or pension owners. These rooms can be had, for the week, for about £20 per person per night, breakfast incl. I can give you some tel numbers if you like, but am away until late Thursday. L.

wasn't this suggested, surely you can drive there instead to broaden your horizons and you are also off to St Anton on 4th Jan, right? Leave Mayrhofen this year, it will still be there next.

You cant just write about 'M' in your new mag ) ... whens that out BTW??

I havent flown in to Munich before, actually. Its also cheaper for car hire than any of the other airports, its a short and easy drive, its somewhere I know to make life easier, and the accommodation is very well prices for the time of year.

If anyone can show me accommodation anywhere else with a decent ski area on the same dates, I am all ears.

Driving is not a viable option, it costs too much when you can get free flights. As I said, I am quite happy to go elsewhere, but I have not found anywhere with suitable accommodation at a cheap rate for the time of year compared to this. You do tend to look at places you know first.
Why dont you tell the Niederau gang to go and broaden their horizons????

XX- I HOPE YOU LIKE ST ANTON, TIS GREAT -XX

Leave Mayrhofen this year, it will still be there next.

Driving is not a viable option,

XX- I WAS SUGGESTING DRIVING FROM THE AIRPORT AS YOU HAVE SAID YOU ARE PREPARED TO DO THAT, ALSO THE TRAINS ARE VERY EFFICIENT AND REASONABLY PRICED -XX

XX- HA, HA, I HAVE COMMENTED ON THAT BEFORE, BUT OF COURSE AS YOU ARE AWARE, THEY DESCRIBE THEIR REASONS AND THEY HAVE FOUND THERE HAVEN SO I CANNOT DISAGREE, YOU APPEAR TO WANT TO STRETCH YOUR LEGS BUT HAVE ONLY BEEN TO A LIMITED NUMBER OF RESORTS DESPITE OBVIOUSLY BEING VERY KEEN ON THE SPORT AND OBVIOULSY RELITIVELY NEW TO THE SPORT.

ABOVE (ON FACE OF IT), SEEMS TO BE £20 A NIGHT TO A LOCATION THAT YOU HAVE ASKED FOR DECENT ACCOMODATION DETAILS ON YET YOU ARE BACK AT MAYRHOFEN - WHAT FOR THE 6TH TIME??

YOUR POSTS CONTINUALLY SAY YOU WANT TO GO HERE OR THERE ON PRETTY MUCH EVERY RESORTS MENTIONED. I'M NOT HAVING A GO BUT YOU SAY THAT YOU ONLY GET OUT 2/3 WEEKS PER YEAR (NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT) SO TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE RATHER THAT THE HARI KARI.... M IS YOUR COMFORT BLANKET -XX

XX- REST ASSURED, I WILL BE BUYING IT AND I HOPE IT DOES VERY WELL INDEED. -XX

Tony I came accross a blog and have copied and ppasted it here:

Between December and April go skiing in on of the many ski areas. There are too many south of Munich to give detailed descriptions here. If you want to spent 39 Euro for a day ticket the “Zugspitze” ski area is definitely worth a visit skiing and snowboarding on the glaciers below the nearly 3000m peak of Gernaby’s highest mountain. The gondola up to the summit starts close to the town of Garmisch Partenkirchen (take highway 95 from Munich to Garmisch) and in Garmisch follow the signs towards the “Zugspitzbahn” and “Gondel”. After skiing you can enjoy the public swimming hall of Garmisch, which is well marked. This swimming place features normal pools, some hot pools and sauna. The best way to relax after a day of skiing.

Karen again: it means nothing to me but thought it might be worth a look or you might have heard of it.
