Hi All

Wondered if anyone out there might be able to give me some advice, my wife and i go to Seefeld at the end of Jan on our first ski trip, we are learning at Castleford and they supply a wide ankle/calf fitting boot (still bloody uncomfortable though!), does anyone know if hire shops in Seefeld do the same, or would it be recommended to buy our own boots,as although we aren't very good we've certainly got the bug!

I would get boots fitted. If one thing is going to improve your skiing by a large amount instantly it will be expertly fitted boots. Where are you location wise?

We're in Nottingham, just called at our local Decathlon and tried some off the shelf boots just out of interest and even a pair of £100 boots were an incredible difference

I think you should get fitted, maybe someone else could chime in with a good boot fitter in the Nottingham area?

If you are going to invest in one thing make it a properly fitted ski boots-don't think I can emphasise this enough.

Seefeld looks like a nice place.. I hope you get the white stuff (snow  ))

Seefelds a beautiful place, have been the last 5 years. We always hire our ski equipment but take our own boards and boots. There are at least 8 hire shops, all very helpful. We usually hire from the shop near the nursery slopes, just because its convenient to the hotel we stay at.
You will have a brilliant time, always loads of snow. Where are you staying?

We're staying at the Hotel Seespitz (hopefully not Cesspit), looks nice looking forward to soothing my aching joints in a heated outdoor pool. I'm under the impression the boots and skis are generally good quality so hopefully we'll be ok.

Hotel Seespitz is nice, not in the main precinct but only a few minutes walk away, so you should be nice and peaceful. It overlooks the lakes I think, although they will be frozen when you are there. But its beautiful walks all around there. Although there are ski bus,s to all three ski area,s they are all in walking distance. All the boots etc seem to be of high quality. In fact every-thing about Seefeld is quality. You will love it. We are giving it a miss this year only because my Hubby wants to go some-where different. But we shall return.

Seefeld is great. I must have been at Roshütte (Seefeld), 30 times last season (my first season skiing). It is easy enough to learn there. I used to drive up from Innsbruck, which I visit every few weeks. Plenty of nice bars in Seefeld, where you can always warm up with a gluhwein, and the typical Austrian soups.

I did not encounter many British people there, there are a lot of locals (especially at weekends), who are normally competent and safe. Also you find parties of local schoolchildren, either following an instructer down the lower slope in perfect formation, or schussing at irritatingly high speed. Most of the foreigners there were Germans.

Probably like a lot of Austrian slopes, if the weather is decent, it gets over-crowded, and that is the one down side. What with a big range of ability, and some skiiers and especially snowboarders who are obviously going too fast for their control, it can be a bit dangerous. But it should be OK if you are careful.

I don't know about the hire shops, but everyone there skis. You can be confident that all the shops and instructers know what they are talking about, and are alive to the issue of finding comfortable boots. In Innsbruck, and I imagine Seefeld, you find a bigger range of equipment in the shops than is normally found in the UK. (A few weeks ago I went into Lillywhites in London and asked a member of staff, Where are the skis? He looked puzzled and said, What are skis?...Eventually I found someone who knew what skis are, and that they don't stock them out of season.)

The Austrians have some great ski instructers. I picked up some good tips from this video of an Austrian instructer teaching a German family: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGE8-D-EiUU
