New Lift Unveiled Capable of Carrying 8,000 Skiers Per Hour

French lift manufacturer MND has unveiled a new model of gondola lift, ORIZON™, which it says will be able to double the capacity of existing lists.

MND's say they have invested 20 million Euros in creating its ORIZON™ lift, designing it to be able to carry a wide range of configurations, from 6-seater chairlifts with or without bubble to 10, 16 and 20-seat gondolas, and capacities of up to 8,000 people per hour and per direction at speeds of up to 7 metres per second.

Icelandic Ski Area Records 100,000 Skier Visits For First Time

Iceland's leading ski area of Bláfjall has closed its 60th season with a record number of skier visits, hitting 100,000 for the first time, during its closing weekend.

The resort's previous record of 84,600 was set 15 years ago in the winter of 2008-9. The resort's operators are putting the jump in skier numbers down, not to a particularly good winter for snowfall, but investment in snowmaking and improved lifts over the past few years.

Another All-Electric Piste Basher Unveiled

The all-terrain electric vehicle manufacturer Xelom has unveiled a new all-electric groomer at indoor snow centre SnowWorld Zoetermeer near Rotterdam in The Netherlands.

The Italian company's Snow Cat electric groomer can run five hours on a single charge and generate 27,600 Nm (20,365 foot pounds) of torque, the company says.

More Southern Hemisphere Snowfall

There's been fresh snowfall down to base level at ski areas in New Zealand and the Andes as the start of the southern hemisphere's 2024 season is now just five weeks away.

Ski areas across New Zealand reported 5-15cm snowfalls, and mountains turned white in South america too with snowfall expected to continue there through the weekend with overnight temperatures as low as -10C expected on the highest ground.

Val d’Isère’s Vallon Gondola Makes Final Ascent

Val d'Isère's current Vallon gondola has made its final ascent after more than four decades of service.

The lift at the Iseran Pass went into service in 1981 and has since carried more than 25 million passengers up to the Pissaillas glacier.

ABTA Warn Uninsured Of Spiralling Medical Costs Abroad

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) is warning travellers that medical costs, particularly repatriation by air ambulance, have more than doubled in the last four years in some cases. As the costs were very high as it was, the organisation says that it makes taking travel insurance even more essential.

French Ski Season Continuing To July

Les 2 Alpes (pictured this week) plans to keep operating its glacier summer ski area through to July 7th this year.

The resort, which currently reports the snow lying over 3 metres (10 feet) deep up high, will officially end its winter season this coming Sunday, but then re-open the next day for a 10 week 'summer' glacier ski and snowboarding season from Monday 29th April.

Indoor Snow Running in Dubai

An event that has proven very popular in recent years, a running race on an adventure course created within the famous Ski Dubai indoor snow centre, returns this May.

With outdoor temperatures in the +25 to +40 degrees Celcius range, the DXB Snow Run offers the emirate's runners the chance to run in a much cooler atmosphere – up to 44 degrees cooler at -4C in fact.

Heavy Late April Snowfall in the Alps

Snow has continued falling in the Alps this week after the weather across the region turned wintry again last week.

The pattern mirrors the cold and snowy spring of 2023 which saw snow depths continue to build over a month after the usual snow depths peak in early March.

€155m Les Grands Montets Upgrade Announced

A huge €155 million project to replace lifts at the iconic Les Grands Montets ski area above Argentière in the Chamonix Valley has been announced, nearly six years after a fire destroyed several key lifts.

After a year of studies, fine-tuning, and preparatory work, the plans were announced at the Mountain Planet 2024 trade show currently underway in Grenoble with the Compagnie du Mont-Blanc awarding a €107.6m contract to Doppelmayr France to replace the two sections of cable cars destroyed in the 2018 fire, as well as the reconstruction and redevelopment of the infrastructure at the summit station of the Aiguille of the Grands Montets.

Survey shows 2/3 of Americans started skiing before they were 14

New research from the SIA (Snowsports Industries of America) show that Americans were on average 14 years old when they started skiing or snowboarding, but that two-thirds were even younger.

The report shows that the most common way of getting into snowsports was through their family, followed by friends. Only 8% started via the school.

Zermatt Ends Summer Ski Training for Elite Racers After World Cup Races Cancelled

Zermatt's lift company, Zermatt Bergbahnen, has announced a change of summer skiing strategy following the decision of the International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS) as well as the Italian and Swiss federations to give up on attempts to stage World Cup races on the new course created there.

Bear Causes Californian Ski Runs Closure

A wandering bear led California's Palisades Tahoe ski area to close some of its slopes.

The black bear was initially spotted near the top of the Granite Chief run, "looking curiously at people and the garbage bin at the top," Palisades spokesperson Patrick Lacey told SFGATE.

North Korea Building New Ski Resort

North Korea is reported to have a new ski resort under construction after the first international winter sports tourists since 2019 arrived from Russia.

The group of Russian skiers, reported to number 98, visited North Korea's best known and largest ski area Masik Pass ski resort which was famously conceived and built to what seems to be a high standard in less than a year in 2013.

Three World Records For High Snow Jumps Set in Mürren

Last week saw non-stop ski and snowboard action on the Schilthorn above Mürren in Switzerland as the annual Swatch Nines saw three new world records set.

Altogether of 40 invited riders from 13 different countries took part in the week-long session on a spectacular custom course of features which included "the Perfect Hip" which had been created with the intention of sending riders "sky-high safely."

Skier Dies Attempting To Jump Over A Road

A young skier has died apparently attempting to ski jump across a highway in Colorado.

The 21-year-old male skier died from injuries sustained whilst attempting to jump across US Highway 40 in what the local Grand County Sheriff's Office described as a "high-risk skiing stunt."

Mr. Ski To Attempt New Ski World Record Aged 50

German skier Christian Flühr, who has set 13 Guinness World Records, most of them for skiing, has announced he'll be setting a 14th world record next winter, to celebrate 25 years since he set his first one.

Flühr, from Germany's Feldkirchen-Westerham, now aged 50, set many of his records, subsequently broken by others, for endurance skiing, skiing downhill for as long and as far as possible, earning him the nicknames in Austrian and German media of "Bond on boards" or "0-0 skis" or simply "Mr Ski".

The Swatch Nines 2024 is coming to Murren

From 09 to 13 April the Swatch Nines will bring an elite crew of skiers and snowboarders to Murren in Switzerland for this unique freestyle event.

The Swatch Nines took 16 days to create by a team of 21 snowpark builders. The massive hip is 21m high and includes 60,000 m3 of natural snow.

Olympic Snowboarding Returning to Park City

America's largest ski area, Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR), has been named an official venue of the Salt Lake City-Utah bid to host the 2034 Olympic Winter Games.

Pending confirmation of the 2034 Olympic events, PCMR will host competitions in men's and women's snowboarding halfpipe, snowboarding slopestyle, freestyle skiing halfpipe and freestyle skiing slopestyle.

US Resorts Announce May Opening Plans

A growing number of US ski areas have announced plans to keep open into May after good spring snowfalls.

Most recently ski areas on the East Coast have reported up to a metre (3.3 feet) of fresh snowfall over the last four days.

However it's mostly West coast areas planning May operations with the deepest lying snow in North America. Only Killington in Vermont has confirmed its aiming for May if it can. It has had plenty of fresh snow this week but is well below its average for the season overall.

Tickets Go On Sale For Next Autum’s London Snow Show

The Birmingham Snow Show which was revived for three years by the same company that runs the relaunched London Show has been cancelled. The London show debuted in its latest incarnation last autumn.

Bansko Still Open as Bulgaria’s Season Ends Early Elsewhere

Bansko has stressed that it intends to stay open to its planned closing date on April 14th, a week on Sunday, after most other Bulgarian ski resorts closed for the season earlier than planned on Wednesday.

Temperatures across the country have suddenly risen into the 20s Celsius after snowfall just a few days ago, with warm weather from the Sahara said to be the culprit. The warm sunny weather is now not expected to move on anytime soon.

Test Drive Your Own Piste Basher

Austria's Hintertux glacier ski area are again giving anyone who wants to give it a try, the chance to drive a snow grooming tractor or piste basher.

The glacier ski centre in the Austrian Tirol, which is one of only two still open for skiing and snowboarding year round, has its own dedicated PistenBully Test Area where the 600 horsepower machines can be tried out.

World’s Deepest Snow Levels Still Climbing in April

The deepest snow depth reported in the world this week has hit 5.5 metres (nearly 18 feet), the greatest depth reported this season.

Saas Fee has reached the 5.5 metre level on its glacier with fellow Swiss area Laax reaching 5.2 metres on theirs.
