For all of us vertically challenged peeps, I have found wearing a helmet quite useful when around taller people who are carrying skis over their shoulders, whilst talking to their mates/on the phone etc

Think you are right. Helmets have started to look cool. I think I look 'cooler' in my helmet than a hat. I look stupid in hats

I think most people who are on the snow a lot, do look at people who are not wearing helmets, as out of touch, or not very serious about their sport. Just the way it is now, most serious skiers/boarders are wearing helmets.

That's not to say someone not wearing a helmet is not serious, but it certainly gives that impression.

because I'm so inclined .....

Thats a very strange statement, does it really worry me that other people think I am out of touch cause I don't wear a helmet, answer no, your not a helmet salesman by any chance

Ian,
As I said, it's just like the people in the lift in Candid Camera. It is very hard to resist the 'flow' and be the one person facing the other way.

However, I don't think it's got to the point yet when there's hardly anyone left on the slope helmetless. I saw several people ski-ing and boarding last week at Tignes without helmets (including our instructor!). Naturally, all the national and international slalom racers were wearing helmets. I expect it's a rule now - part of their training.
