Medran 2? It's just a bubble. The only mixed gondola/chair in Verbier is La Chaux Express. If you take the chair you need to get off at the top of Fontanet, which is steep, but beginners or walkers can take the gondola. Beginners will still need to ride a chair if they want to ski in that area. There were never plans to build gondola/chair instead of two lifts at Mayentzet, only to replace them with a modern fast lift. Gondola would serve absolutely no purpose there. At least it brings beginners to and from La Chaux so that they don't have to ski the steep slope that leads to beginners'area and out of it back to Ruinettes. But Combe1 and Combe2 are not beginners's slopes, gondola would be a waste of money there.

There is no gondola at the new Mayentzet lift, only 6-seater chairs. You can still ski from Attelas to Medran without having to use any chairs, but I am not sure how beginners will cope with this run.
How would you do it?

Ski Stockhorn! This is definitely the best run in Zermatt.

Jura Skiing

I skied in Crozet couple years back. A friend lives there so I took my skis on visiting him, it was a snowy period so we had good time. But seasons there are short - mountains are just not high enough. At the moment Jura is well covered due to recent storms, and it's cold so this snow is likely to stay for some time. Jura is good for occasional visits but not sure it's worth having a season pass (if it exists). If you are going to live in Geneva and want to have good skiing for a day without having to stay in the hotel or rent a place, then Les Contamines or Flaine should be better options.
The description of this accident doesn't seem to be very accurate. One article mentions "ducking the ropes" and going off-piste. Mont-Gele IS off-piste, there is only a cable car that takes skiers there no ropes that you can duck.
Next week is expected to be sunny, but then who knows... Makes a nice change from last season. In Verbier all itineraries are closed, so is the link to 4 vallees. Stil had a great powder day on Saturday despite low visibilty, but I know the place very well. If in a new resort get a guide or an instructor, they will take you to places that will be interesting to ski.
I need some advice choosing skis!

Way too short. I am 5'6" and, being female, light build and my Head Supershapes Titan's are 156. This was length I was recommended for my first beginner's carvers when I first learned in 2004 and I've skied a lot since then. All my other skis are longer. Titan and Enduro are in the same category. Correct length for you should be 175, or at least 168 as the very minimum but that would be on a shorter side (you said you prefered short skis). I can't see how anything shorter than this will work for you. 150 is way outside your range for any skis.
