I did think about buying some as they look way easier than chains to put on ..but then I have never needed the chains

Chains are really easy to put on in the garage with the light on. It always becomes more fun by the side of the road with cold fingers and fading light. After struggling with this once I now carry old gloves for that job - and a head torch!!!
Also it's not just about preventing death. Fall over, your head hits the deck - a helmet will prevent you from getting nasty cuts that put blood all over that white snow.

Why do downhill racers wear helmets if speed over 20mph they are useless?

Here we go......

If hearing is the only downside, remove the ear muffs on the side ;)
Suggest you read the very very long thread (locked) on this forum - every opinion is there!

The answer should not be based on google searches - there's always stats for each side of the story. if you were in a collision over 20mph (not fast on ski) I think a helmet would be effective. As above, it's personal choice. This is a very old topic

Some countries (not France) the tour operators off ski guiding. I have done it in a few occasions and happens as you described (tends to be intermediate upwards). Great for getting to know others and exploring the mountains. In France the relevant authorities don't let anyone but ESF do this kind of thing - but they charge €€€

Does that mean from 20 Jan we will have bluebird every day with crisp chilly temperatures.

Going with Mrs Icy's Sister this year - her first time skiing. Hope she doesn't think it's always like this :D
