I've been to both, and 100% agree that they are not resorts for beginners. If I had to choose between the 2, I would go for St.Anton everytime, if anything because the neighbouring areas of Lech and Warth are welcoming and enjoyable, where as I found Tignes bland and without charm when I was in VDI. My opinion of course, but for me it's the whole area I look at, not just the locality of my chalet.

Thanks for the info Ice. We are going for a week next year. Like I said it was only to have a midweek break for the boy, a day out at Aquarius in Avoriaz is on the cards.
Thanks for your help and safe journey home. |

I like linked skiing because (as an example) if some people you are meeting are in a different location (example....Courchevel to Meribel) it's more fun to ski to meet than 1 group having to wait and the other having to get the bus.
I guess going to the 3 valleys, Tignes/VDI, Les Arcs/La Plagne, Lech/Zurs/Warth has made me get used to it and I like it. Again, only my opinion. |

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, this is my 8th year. We've just come back from Lech and the skiing is fantastic.....challenges are plentiful, trees, cruisers, you name it. We had ski in ski out too and having been there for 2 years can recommend it heartily, and a great alternative to the big Frenchies.
Saying that, it's back to the 3 valleys and then Morzine for me next year!!! |

Hi T1b
I've been to Chamonix and being honest I'm not it's biggest fan. The skiing is great but not for novices, and the town centre is lovely. My issue is with the different areas being bus rides apart, and very little if any ski in-out. It is a nice place, but so many other places offer better access and linked skiing, I would always look elsewhere. It's only my opinion of course, so good luck in your choice. |
