Ooo, now there is a thought.
I would not mind betting that if your insurance did not cover you for heli-skiing and you were rescued by helicopter, that at least one insurance company would try to claim that it rendered your policy invalid  Why do we have such bad thoughts about our insurance companies? |

 Oh, the equipment was not so bad, this was the best available from the Rila hire shop..
Frankly, I was not surprised when I saw these coming down the road, just about sums it up for me. Bulgarian Cowboys.. ![]() |

Hi Daz68,
I stayed in the Rila about 4 years ago. Like AllyG, personally I would not return to Borovets unles it was a real last resort, but also, there are many people who seem to enjoy it. The Rila was just about OK. The rooms are reasonably sized and the hot water never failed. There were some mould issues in the bathrooms, but only up near the ceiling. I have attached some pictures of the room below. The food, I guess was edible, and certainly plentiful. Every so often something decent turned up on the buffet, and when I was there, there was a cook doing fresh pizzas in the evening and eggs and pancakes (American Style) in the morning. The biggest downside for me personally was the smoking  I am not joking when I say I have seen "thinner" fog in the UK cause speed restrictions on major roads. It seems that every Bulgarian in the world is a chain smoker :( I know someone who went to the Samakov, and he says it is similar to the Rila, but with much smaller bedrooms. I will leave the comments about the skiing to others, as my opinions are well known. The Rila Hotel..

And the reason I did not enjoy it :( ![]() |

Hi Bakewell Blue.
Never actually travelled with Swiss Air, but I am aware of the claim for free ski carriage. Their website does not seem to fully explain if it is included in your allowance, or as it is ski equipment if it is an additional 15kg. Look at their page (url below), and if nobody can answer you by tomorrow, I suggest that you use the listed numbers and phone them to find out. Swiss Air Sports Baggage Page Enjoy your trip :D |

But what did they do with their skis? Seems strange that the helicopter took them off up to the top of the lift (very kind of them) but did not take the skis so they could carry on skiing. Hope they got a lift refund  . . . . Only joking. Excellent work by the rescue people. |

   Uh oh. OK, I do not want to seem patronising or sexist here, but given the above comment, I should now make sure you are aware how big bills can be when using smartphones abroad and not knowing exactly what the phone is up to. Phone companies have in recent times introduced a cap on roaming data to prevent the £0000's size bills which some people did manage to run up (admittedly they were extreme), but you need to be aware that if you sign up to a roaming deal, the cap may be lifted on your phone. Please ensure that your daughter shows you what is going on, and ideally install a monitoring app which you know how to use so you can check on what you or your phone have been up to. I use Onavo on my Android based phone. It is capable of stopping the phone from using data at a pre set limit. So if you buy a 30mb deal for a month, set the app to stop the phone at 29mb of use, you then have a tiny bit left for emergencies. |
