I have never been to Verbier but have been to Zermatt, infact I am on the train making my way there right now, accompanied buy my good friend Hr. Weizen :)
I love the place and this will be third time for a weekend, but I've never been high season. Even in May the place is great and although the melt had started still loads of ground to cover. I love the Italian side also, great snowboarding runs. I think Switzerland is more affordable these days for those who's spending power is Sterling of the Euro. And it's no way near as expensive as France. |

I go riding alone more than I do with others. It's all I spend my money on whilst my other snow-keen pals have other interests. I like both with equal measure. Sometimes a weekend alone is great to calibrate the mind. A week and you really need to latch on to others to enjoy it. Went to Chile alone this summer and had an awesome time, met up with a couple of Aussies, a Brazilian and an American.
That reminds me I have a place going spare in a rather nice hotel in Saalbach-Hinterglemm to fill for the 12th to 19th December if anyone is interested :) unforseen circumstances  :( Anyway off to Zermatt tomorrow for a quick weekend of reflection!! |

It was a way out west type of suggestion based on my little knowledge, but as someone with an unaturally high arch to both feet I have no trouble snowboarding. Also your point about no other activities causing this discomfort makes me think that it's not so far fetched. Also 50 is not too late to change anything, I am trying to talk my 67 year old father into hiking up Kilimanjaro next year, he is concerned about altitude. He's fitter than me and has learnt to dive since 10 years with around 600 - 700 dives. Not bad for someone who had not done anything physical for a couple of decades and suffered serious hypotension etc. Think he'd achieve it easier than me!
Good luck with whatever you decide :) |

Jon, I am based in Germany so definately no flying involved for me, only do resorts with train and bus links, which is all of them really. No probs with a couple of gluhweins, this should present no particular problem 8) Where are you heading from BsM? I have done both La Plagne and Val d'Isere from or passing through there. Flying to Geneva and getting the bus is not a bad option, especially early season. |
