What's a snow house?
Mayrhofen is great, really great. I will be there last week in March for Snowbombing http://www.snowbombing.com/en/ I can't wait :) I can't reccomend the resort highly enough, great accomodation, great hospitality, great skiing/riding and great apres ski. Great. |

Anyone been? Got back to Germany after a wonderful week in Austria, and I need my fix. Just a few hours drive from me, wondering if it was any good and if my gf would enjoy it for the weekend.....I know I will....give me a hill, some frost and a try and I'll be happy.

I wouldn't dare offer any advice on equipment as I am of the "one plank of wood ilk" and would no doubt get it wrong.
However you could try working out on your legs a bit to bulk them up, this would no doubt help with your skiing anyway. I don't mean Arnie in his shorts throwing truck wheels around or anything, just some gym (or outdoor) activities, I guess rowing and cycling would be the best. |

Good luck and have fun (you lucky puppy).
Let us know how it goes!!! I will be back there at the end of March, hope there will still be some snow! |

I ride duck stance, with a bias towards the longer end of my board, 14-16° pointing forwards, and 8-10° pointing backards (naturally slightly splay footed anyway). I taught myself to board as some on here might remember and had big problems riding front foot forwards with linked turns. I did have no problem however riding switch. No I can do both and can set my board either regular or fakie with no real trouble at all. Being able to ride both ends of the board equally has made me massively comforatble with switching at high speed. I just got back from Austria this weekend where my overall boarding has dramatically improved. I still need a few more days practice though  I agree with the advice of Trencher, just give it a try for a few hours (don't give up too soon) and see how it goes. Alternatively you could go up the the top of Le Grande Motte in Tignes, with a really bad hangover and try and get down the series of red runs after realising you put your bindings on the wrong way round after collecting your board from service, worked for me!!! |

DON'T GIVE UP........it will be worth it in the end.
I started to ride 13 months ago in La Plagne, I was 31 and had never been on a mountain before. I took a 2 hour lesson on the first day and quit after an hour. I was unfit, the other girl with me claimed to be a complete novice, but later admitted 8 days experience, it was frustrating for me and the instructor as I was so far behind. If I hadn't hired the equipmet for a week and bought a weeks pass, I would have just given up and got drunk for a week, but I didn't and I am so happy about it. I went off for 4 days alone on the nursery slopes and taught myself, by watching people and trying it out. Now I do have bad habits, but I can get down a mountain very comfortably, run all grades of slope (still struggle with very narrow red runs however) and have some real fun. In 2 weeks I will be in the Amade Ski range for my second full week of the season (I'm aiming for 30 days this winter, I've been in Val d'Isere already) and I will be taking private lessons 1 on 1 for at least part of it to rid me of my bad habits. BTW, I was able to teach a friend the basics towards the end of my 2nd week of riding in Mayrhofen (he is 14 stone), so if you choose the solo path it will not be long before you can help your kids!!!! |

Hey tjwollert,
I live in Karlsruhe (about 45 mins from Stuttgart) and if I want a quickly arranged 2 days and 1 night I head for the Feldberg in the Black Forest. For some reason not on that map. Its probably a 2 hour drive from Stuttgart, it's an hour and a bit from here. Its not the Alps (peak is about 1500m), but it's good enough and close!!! Anyway check out the links (German only), they do a season pass for 260 € and you can get accomodation for as little as 25 € a night if you wanna make a weekend of it. These are the prices..... http://www.liftverbund-feldberg.de/skigebiete/wintersportzentrum_feldberg Some piccies..... http://www.liftverbund-feldberg.de/aktuell/webcams List of lifts, runs etc. (Click in the "mehr infos" button on the fifts and it will give you an idea of the length of the run)...... http://www.liftverbund-feldberg.de/aktuell/schneebericht Hope that helps! |
