(Chamnoix is just to the west of where France, Italy and Switzerland meet). Heavy snow (25+cm per 3hours) from 7am tomorrow morning through till early Wednesday.

well if im honest im not too sure how to read that but i will take your word for it and really really hope your right and its gonna hammer it down. so how much are they saying in total tomorrow and what difference is that likely to make.

heard somewhere that due to chamonix's terrain they need between 1/2 -1meter of snow to open any runs. ........ otherwise its very rocky.

They've had 20odd cms and are expecting another 60cm. The conditions will be excellent!

Just had a quick look on chamonix.co.uk and as of 05/12/2011 they will have there partial opening ( weather depending ) guess its still in the balance. just hope the forecasters are wrong and more comes than forecast. really will be a waiting game. suppose the plus side is not long to wait. anyone a bit closer to the action who can give us an update ???? machine movement etc ???? theres a very bright light showing on the grand montets web cam and wondered if maybe that was a piste basher moving around. ( yes people i really am the desperate ) had all new gear . skis boots the lot and will be gutted if i can put them to good use till march.

andyhull wrote:It should snow off and on for the next 3 days (60+cms), they will then have Thursday and Friday clear. That's more than enough for them to work their magic. Given how much more snow is forecast and 4 days I guess that gives them the luxury of waiting.
With no skiers about they'll be able to bash around the clock, they'll have some of it open for the start. They may save some for the Christmas period if no more snow is forecast for next week.
They are still saying partial opening on the 10th.

to be fair with theway things have been i will be happy with any reason to get my skis on. i can see them having there partial opening on the original full opening weekend and then open fully should the weather allow it on christmas . would just love to hear something that they are planning to open .....granted that have said the tenth but that was with just a distant forecast. does this date still count now.

More snow to come tomorrow and Wednesday so, yes, probably.

But as asked how long does it take to shape the pistes ?

Will they not need a large ammount on the ground to move around therefor leaving very bare ground all around. i have to say valthorens looks great currently as i said due to the fact they made there pistes with cannons first. http://www.valthonet.com/webcams/a-panoramic-view-of-val-thorens.html

Well people it seems to have been snowing fairly heavy over the last few days all overr the alps, have noticed it has completely transformed val thoren. all there man made pistes are now coated with a lovely layer of fresh powder.

Anyway back to chamonix. does anyone know if enough snow has fell for them to start making out the pistes ? cant see any movement at all on the web cams . not istes or piste bashers in sight . and no snow cannonss

Are they really going to have it ready by saturday for the new opening date of the grand montets ??????

Tocanepauli wrote:Just been watching the live webcams and there IS snow falling - have noticed quite a lot (already) at resort (1850M) area.

where have you seen this ? not manages to actually see any falling. doesnt seem like alot fell last night and most websites have wipes off half the predicted depths in the next 7 days. guess its still a bit unpredicable after all.

anyone know how much needs to fall before we will see the piste bashers etc working ??
