I was there opening weekend last year and we were in a meter of fresh powder. Words cant do it any justice. Was amazing. Just hope they open on time... as we are there in two weeks again and this time im bringing 5 friends after seeing the footage from last year . They will bs seriously unhappy if the lifts arent open.. |

Damn lets hope it stays colder or not warm for too long. Reading online its said that les houches will open 15/16th december for weekend. Is there enough snow around in your opinion for them to be able to open anhthing up yet ??? Grand montets is set to open next saturday. Would there be any reason if the snow was there for them not to open ??? Have you eber known them not to open whe posted ?? Or on the other hand openearlier than advertised. I know coming opening weekend is a risk but its not like theres no snow around. Thank you for you on the ground updates. If not we are cancelling our hotel and heading to tignes where the runs are already opening... |

Anyone know if they have started with snow cannons or even prepping the piste ? Seems on the web cams the grand montet is deserted and thats due to open in 6 days ??????? Anyone got any news on les houches ?? Looks cracking on the webcams.

Lets hope it hit chamonix as it really is where we wanted to go and have accomodation lined up so fingers crossed we dont have to change. I know early season is a big risk but i will be happy with any reason to slip my boots on. So come on dump and open just a few runs on the grand montets......... might opt for tignes next year. Dont remember why we opted for chamonix over tignes last year. Think it was down to finding it harder to find cheapish accom for 4 nights. Although this year i have found lots. Oh well live and learn and thanks people for the info on transfers.... cham is only around 1 hour if i remember so would prefer that to the 3 of tignes.... |

Well it seems a change of plans may be on the cards. looking at the forecast there is some snow showing 5-6 days out however as we know this is often not the case and anything past 3 days is just guess work. so with that in mind we are thinking of changing to ignes and ski the grand motte glacier. already open and looks awesome. found some decent digs at a lost cost (all we need is a bed ) however as our flights get us in to geneva i was unsure about the transfers ????? anyone care to enlighten ? also we are not rushing into anything. we fly on the 14th and have decided if theres still no signs by this time on the 7th were going to change locations.

Well after a solid early season start with plenty of cold nights and the odd snow fall it seems to have dried up again. and have to say im starting to twitch as its only 4 weeks until the proposed opening of the season .....
come on people lets get the snow dance going........... anyone local who can offer any encouraging comments would be great otherwise there will be 5 of us all sat around a hotel for 4 days with nothing to do but drink. man that will be expensive.... |

Well once again i have booked as a group of 4 for a 4 day pre christmas break the week before christmas. however i noticed they have changed the lift opening dates this year.
last year partial throughout the resort was i believe the 8th and full was 17th ( the weekend we went ) this year there is only a partial opening of the grand montets on the 8th and weekend of the les houches the weekend of the 15th ( the weekend we go this year ) im wondering if that means there will be no attempt to open any earlier if there is snow cover or are these just projected dates and if the snow is there they will go ahead and prep the slopes. last year was kinda strange as they had too much snow in a short time to be able to handle it and only les houches and 3 runs on grand montet were open due to avalanche risk. last year really was so stressful not knowing whther it was going to snow and i said i wasnt going to get dragged into it again this year yet already i find myself looking. im wondering as i probably did if there is anyone local to chamonix out there who can remember the history of opening weekend over the years and whether skiing at some point has always been possible. anyway here we go again. difference is this year i couldnt resist and have booked to go back in the first week of feb to to the aguillie du midi :-) |
