Ski distances on holiday

When doing the Three Valleys tour last year, the GPS I had was frequently (and consistently) recording speeds of 85km/h. A few readings of 100+ km/h had me laughing, but I'm fairly sure a speed of 85km/h isn't unrealistic. The GPS is a fairly good one, didn't throw up more than a handful of false speeds when on a car journey of 7000km. Given that it was a good 60km/h slower than the fastest slalom speeds recorded (and bearing in mind that wind resistance increases with velocity squared!) I'd say it's far from impossible for us mortals.
Hey all,

So I've got a few pennies saved, and my birthday is coming up, so I was thinking about investing in my first pair of skis. Given I seem to be skiing twice a year nowadays, I think it's probably a good investment. Copying somewhat one of the other threads on a similar topic, here are my 'stats':

Age: 19
Weight: 70kg, though likely to go up a little when I'm back in shape...
Height: 175cm
Skiing Ability: ~10 weeks, can ski most pistes without too many problems, though the hard blacks are still knackering. Starting to learn to properly absorb moguls and 'bounce' through them, though can't do it for long. Enjoy off-piste, though wind-blown crust on steeps still gives me trouble. My progression is slowing down now, though.
Terrain skiied: Starting to spend more and more time off-piste, particularly when conditions are good. Piste still has the majority, though not by a huge amount.

So, any recommendations? I tried and very much liked the Völkl AC-30, but they're seriously expensive. This year tried the Salomon Aero GT, which were nice for the piste but didn't like them much off-piste.

Thanks for any help!

Subway tends to do good things for me when my head feels like it's been put through a blender. Lots of water is an obvious one. Pretty much every bit of food I can get my hands on, actually, and a good dose of fresh air.

I woke up today to find my parents out for a walk and I was tasked with doing a roast, ready for them on their return. Not fair, I say... Then again, I did emerge from bed at about 1 in the afternoon.

The exchange rate being what it is, it's not going to be the best time to buy one while you're there though

That looks like a pretty good programme, though I'm thinking my rather basic French skills might be something of an impediment.\

It's my birthday in February, so maybe I'll be able to get my own then. At the moment, I'm struggling to find the money to pay my rent, so buying one myself is out of the question.

Thanks for the information, both of you. :)

I was just wondering if it's possible to rent transceivers in resort. I'll be heading to Les Deux Alpes, arriving on saturday, and if the conditions are good I'd quite like to do some off-piste stuff, but I don't own a transceiver of my own.

Also, anyone got an idea of how much it would cost?

A Protec B2 helmet with headphones, a 4GB Creative Zen, a pair of new badminton rackets, a North Face mid layer and lots of whiskey!

I'm a very happy man, plus the uni ski trip is on the 2nd, too. Can't wait!

Do you see a use for poles when skiing moguls, or powder?

I don't make much use of my poles on groomers, but when the going gets tough I find skiing without them pretty difficult.
Les Deux Alpes recommendations

Hi all,

I finally managed to get a trip sorted for the upcoming holidays, and in fact just ended up grabbing a place on my university's ski trip to Les Deux Alpes. I've never been before, and I've got no idea what to expect in terms of runs. Does anyone have any recommendations for a fairly confident skiier (Can ski Blacks without much trouble unless conditions are bad, just discovering the joys of some real off-piste.)

I'd be really interested to know of any good off-piste routes, or more challenging runs.

Thank you!
