Budget SKI resort - help
Started by User in France, 10 Replies
Some good deals available for Alpe D'Huez and L2A, I think. Jocrad74 is right about L2A for eating out and supermarkets. Glacier at L2A if it doesn't snow by end Dec. - I think L2A opens in about a week's time, ADH a week later. L2A was firing up the snow cannon at resort level, but it was melting. Bah.

Sounds good. Dobby in Cardiff (wearing a little lamp on my head for Iceman and for snow fall so thick you cannot see through). Daughters are bound to join in, too.

I could sacrifice a small animal too (so-called "pet" hamster), if that would help. Blinking thing is like SPG from the Young Ones.
Absolutely no excuse this year

Tony H. Stop it! Lost 22 lbs...it's depressing me. I'm off to get another beer.

You are right, though. No need to go bonkers to get fit for skiing.

Cardiff Airport's website doesn't show direct flights to many snowy places. Zurich and Milan have direct flights. Not found anything from Cardiff through the TO's yet.

Iceman, I too have a Welsh OH. She "homed". It's a South Wales thing, I think. Glad she did - Cardiff is a great city.

Iceman, I come from Nottingham, and having been brought up in a family of miners, I have a little light on my head. It helped when I emigrated to Cardiff, mind.
Guilty as charged, Pavel. I used the term to give an idea of my daughter's skiing ability. No doubt she will move onto something more parallel this year - she is strong, athletic, and has a good sense of balance. However, I think that snowplough can be good for kids because they can control their speed easily, especially given that they tend to have more flexibility in their hips, knees and ankles which allows them to have a very wide plough with good edging capability for stopping. Me, I hate snowplough......

After almost deciding that Alpe D'Huez is the place to go, OH has decided that Italy would be nice on account of (i) fewer people (ii) cheaper (iii) erm, cheaper and (iv) Italians tend to make a fuss over kids more than the French do (horrible generalisation, I know).

We are two rusty adult intermediates (low end of intermediate and haven't skied for 4 years), a 10 year old with a week under her belt and an 8 year old beginner.

Been to La Thuile. Whilst it would be great for me and OH I don't think it is that good for beginners (no nice runs back to resort).

Been to Livigno (long time ago) and wasn't impressed by teaching or 5 hour transfer (that has changed, I think). Also, I thought that it was not easy to make the transition from nursery slopes in the village to the higher slopes.

How about Passo Tonale or Cervinia. Both seem good for our standard of skiing and should have some snow by the end of Jan. Obviously, January on top of a mountain can be cold and windy.

Anyone got any suggestions or comments?

Cheers

Cardiff airport seems to be on a bit of a downer. Bristol airport seems to be the airport of choice for the TOs. Sometimes the surcharge for Bristol over Gatwick makes me tamp.
