I totally agree... skiing with young children is always a compromise & their needs are very different from adult beginner needs. Adults in Les Gets are only allowed to ski in the Grand Cry area if accompanied by a child, which is great for building confidence in nervous little ones.

A huge varied ski area with lively apres ski certainly wouldn't be my main priorities if my needs were the same as Dobby's. Find somewhere where the children will be happy & the parents should be happy too )

You are right - just want to get the little one onto skis and vaguely in control. For me, lively apres ski is an extra beer after 10pm (old fart speaking).

The only thing I would mention regarding La Thuile is the runs back to resort can be a tad difficult for beginners, you have a couple of options a very steep black/red and I mean steep, or a snow covered what is a mountain road which is I think is blue but very narrow and can get congested, the other option a run back to the village via petit st bernard which is very flat and requires an awful lot of poling.
But at the top there is some loverly beginner and intermediate skiing to be had and the option to return on the gondola.

I know about the home runs at La Thuile - the road ends up being a half pipe and the black was rather steep, icy and full of lunatic French teenagers (one of whom forgot to turn right at the bottom and ended up being caught in the netting)...
Cheers, Dave M. Must say that I liked La Thuile - excellent instruction from huge teddy bear of a woman who was great fun. And great bikers' bar (not with the kids, though....). Shame that there was a blizzard that lasted for most of the week (can happen anywhere - too much snow!).

Cheers, Dave Mac.

I saw that Niederau was recommended in several ski brochures for beginners. What's the snow record like? Resort is quite low (700-800m), isn't it?

Depends on your standard, I think. As an intermediate it had plenty for me (but I am a bit crap!). I have heard some people say that there is not much skiing for a week - they must be a bit quicker than I am. Also, quite high, so likely to have snow.

Cheers

Ski lessons in resort will also show you which slopes you can ski. You don't want to find yourself on some nominally green/blue slope that turns out to be a wee bit steep.

Wife and I are intermediates (she full of grace and style, me like an ox - strong as one, but with an ox's balance)

9 year old has 1 week under belt and can snowplough anything (as only kids can)

7 year old is a beginner and has a tendency to wuss

Preferably short transfer (kids tend to barf on long coach trips)

Cost not a major issue (since mid-Jan should be relatively cheap...I know it's all relative when it comes to skiing)

Cheers

Steve, you are right. School in soldeu is great (have been there) but I have probs with no snow in soldeu.
