Odd week in Saas-Fee
Started by LOTA in Switzerland, 2 Replies, discussing Saas-Fee
Took advantage of the knock-out season lift pass deal to enjoy a second trip of the season for the last week in Saas-Fee. It was distinctly odd, weather wise, with the complete mixture of four seasons in a day. Easter Monday was fine and surprisingly quiet on the slopes. Tuesday and Wednesday had windy rain in town, heavy snow from 2,4000 metres upwards and some great fresh snow skiing. But at 1.15 on Wednesday afternoon, the lifts started to close and the ski patrol ordered everyone off the hill. Only the nursery lifts remained open and this was the case on Thursday and Friday also. Great snow up the mountain but no way to get at it!
The base depth at Engelberg remains the deepest in the Alps, although it has dropped from 7.3 to 7.1 metres. As mentioned in the intro it has been overtaken in Europe by the Fonna glacier in Norway opening with an 8m base and on the world scale by the Gassan ski area in Japan opening and posting a 10m base there!

Perhaps the more interesting stat for many skiers is the lower slope base depth which has dropped to zero at Engelberg meaning top to bottom skiing is about over now although there's still five weeks of skiing left here.

Not strictly true, Mr Admin. There's only one run back to the valley from the Titlis side at Engelberg. This was still open today so you could ski back to the base station. The zero probably refers to the Gerschnialp area of drag lifts that are now closed. This was how it was in late April last year. Somehow, they managed to keep the valley run open with a strip of snow through the meadows!

Glynis wrote:Bansko really is a great resort. We've had a catered chalet here for the last 16 years and still love it. Our snow record is just as good as other resorts, some seasons we have been fully open when a lot of the alpine resorts were scratching for snow. Whether you should go for self catered, B&B, full board or catered really does depend on your budget and what you would expect from each. There are lots of self catered apartments available but choosing the right one in the right location is a bit of lottery. You would need to then find your own way to the gondola each day, in the wrong location it is a 30 minute walk! There are a couple of tour operators that come in to Bansko but they pull out mid March, which is a real shame because our season usually lasts well in to April. March tends to be a really snowy month for us! Although cheap they use larger hotels which serve notoriously substandard food. We've had guests that have migrated from tour operators to us because although their hotels were really poor food wise, they love the town and the slopes. A lot of these people come back year after year. Bansko is a proper town rather than a purpose built resort and has lots of charm and character. In the evenings it's great to have a wander around and get a real feel about it.

That's all good, Glynis, but what about the queues for the gondola which are reported to be horrendous?
I think they mean buying tickets in advance!

I have found over many years that hoteliers in Austria and Switzerland are the most flexible on length of stay and offer suite-type rooms/adjoining rooms etc. One hotel in Switzerland gave me a three-bedroom apartment for the price of a single room! Hotel booking agencies on the internet (booking.com, hotels.de etc) are your friend!

On my bucket list too and I echo the comments about the train access; most welcome for those of us who like to do our own thing away from tour operators but don't want to hire a motor car.

I think the original poster may very well be completely confused by now!

The only suggestion I can give is to invest in some ski lessons with a qualified instructor.

We used the Holiday Shuttle. Very good service at a reasonable price:
