We have just spent a fantastc half-term in Zauchensee with Ski Hillwood who looked after us really well. We had lots of snow and sunshine - pretty perfect conditions. We also had the services of the Ski Hillwood people who provide child care and ski touring trips. Great company to ski with.

Hi
I'm not sure about the cost of a taxi to Wagrain or Alpendorf but if you contact the local Tourist office, they will provide an estimate. Also, some of the hotels provide transfers for guests. Which village are your children skiing from? Wagrain is about 20 minutes drive by car from Alpendorf so it could be crucial where you stay depending on where the children are. Any ski shop will supply rental skis and boots and there are a number of shops in Wagrain and at least one in Alpendorf. Please let me know if you need any further info. We were looking at properties to buy there this summer so I have done lots of research! |

Söll is preeeetty but a bit vulnerable if the snow isn't too good, whereas Zell has the Kaprun glacier. Never skied in Maria Alm but it's a lovely village and I have heard good reports about the skiing - good for cruisers and beginners.
Schladming woudl always get my vote as you have 4 mountains to choose from and the people are great (and not too many Brits) |

One more thing - the ski pass can easily be bought in resort. This is part of the Ski Amade area soone pass will do for both resorts and for everywhere else in the Amade area (Schladming/Flachau/Zauchensee/Filzmoss etc). It's not cheap though and I'm not sure if you can get resort-only passes.

Hi
As far as I know, there are no British companies offering package holidays to either Wagrain or Alpendorf (and I have searched hard) There are some very good hotels in both Wagrain and Alpendorf - we stayed at the Berghof in Alpendorf, which was not cheap but a really good 4 star wellness hotel. I wouldn't recommend the hotel we used in Wagrain but was given some nemes in the sommer which I could probbaly dig out if that would help. Both Wagrain and Alpendorf are easy enough to reach from Salzburg. You can ither get a taxi or a train to St Johann which is only a couple of miles from Alpendorf but a bit further (5-6 miles?) from Wagrain. Alpendorf is just hotels and accommodation but with good access to the skiing. Wagrain is a proper little village but has split ski areas so a bit of bussing will be needed. You can ski between Wagrain and Alpendorf. You don't say where your children are skiing - that might be crucial in terms of where you decide to go. |

Austria wins every time for me!

have you tried wagrain? - there are less Brits there and the half-term is different for the Austrians and Germans. Don't know about the Danish though, who also use Wagrain

We are considering Wagrain for this year's holiday. WE are all good skiers and enjoy good mountain restaurants, good apres-ski and a village atmosphere. I'm a bit worried by the comment that it is good for snowboarding. Does this mean Wagrain is full of youngters with attiitude?
