Short break that wont cost too much???
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 19 Replies
Have a look at flying to Milan and skiing Champoluc, very good for short breaks done that twice, excellent area.

Try looking at snow secrets for the accommodation.

The Hotel Campoluc is at the bottom of the run back into the village so you can be on the lift in minutes in the morning, worth checking out if you can book direct with the hotel.

Also Ski2 specialise in champoluc, again worth comparing but they tend to feel a bit more expensive but service from them was excellent there may be deals to be had with them too, plus transfer is included with them, ski pass and lunch vouchers and they will ferry you around the village if needed plus their own ski hire is very reasonable and free ski deposit at the lift.

Advice on trois valley skiing

Why not stay in Courchevel 1550, much cheaper down there, easy to get the bubble up to 1850 where the skiing is great for all levels, especially beginners they can have great fun there on the greens and blues as already pointed out.

Never thought I'd get my OH skiing but she did there

Just take food with you for a day out don't buy anything in 1850 need a credit card with a huge limit just for a couple of hot chocs.

Rest of 3V good but have been to Courchevel twice as it was great for the beginners we had.
TOG 24 stuff any good?

That's waht happened to me, purchased a TOG24 coat cheap and now only wear it walking the Dog.

However, the fleeces I bought for £14 each this year are great value, very very warm when it was -23, probably say better than some of the North Face and Helly Hansen ones I have.

Kids ski coats/trousers are fine and again good value.

TOG do have a more expensive range that are good and are in sales from time to time and worth buying, but the cheaper end of coats I would probably steer clear of unless using in Spring when it is warmer.
Ski carrying device

No not ski just ties, though that principle is used.

There is a ski tie, but a thick and strong velcro tie which then has an adjustable strap between them that you literally put over your shoulder to carry so they are upright. A bit like putting the stap of sports bag over yoru shoudl is the best way I can describe it.

Also got another that had a pouch at the bottom where the tails of the ski's go into and then the strap is attached from the pouch to a velcro strap that goes abouve the bindings and again forms a carrying strap.

This isn't quite what I have but near enough - [url] http://www.skisling.com/

When I first started skiing 6 years ago, I ended up as the packhorse for wife and 2 young kids, somehow carrying 4 sets of ski's.

On return from that first trip I decided that I would not be doing that again so just looked on eBay and there was a ski-sling that strapped on the ski's quick and easy and then put over the shoulder really easy to carry.

Really helped the next trip, but haven't needed to use them since as I either went on my own or been lucky enough that there was ski storage right by the lifts!

1850 perfect skiing experience for the whole family, plenty of runs to suit all and found ski schools there pretty good, used BASI and Magic.

Just ensure plenty of room on your credit card for snacks and coffee, crepe 7Euro, Coffee 7Euro, Coke 7Euro - Bit of theme running!!!

Used to get a bagette with cheese or Ham in across the road at a bar which was only 4Euro and was enough for 2 plus a choice in the Forum across the road as well but found that quite busy.

No issues with lift queues as was mentioned earlier, plenty of choice to get you up and away.
Ski Graphics - Left & Right.

Some ski's are made left and right, Elan Amphibio;s, they have left and right printed on them for idiots like me, as they are Rockered and Cambered ski's, waveflex and with Porsche engineering etc..

Doesn't mean a hell of a lot to me but all I do know is that the first set of ski's I hired this year I didn't feel comfortable on, went back to the shop and I was lucky enough to be given the Elan's as my rental ski's. They were a pleasure to ski on for a progressing intermediate, sorting my boots out properly this year as well probably helped but the ski's were a pleasure, didn't want to give them back.

I am gussing repeated use of other ski's may cause the cambered effect over time and hence the right and left ski scenario.

Roof box v ski rack

Borrowed a roof box when we drove to Austria in Feb, worked a treat for us as we had 5 in the car and wanted the extra space. Took food etc. going and on the way back any boots, ski boots and used ski kit we put in in black plastic bags and shoved in there. Loads of room in them and doesn't cram the car full.

No extra fees if you are over 1.85m on Eurotunnel, you just go in a taller train, best to book it and if you don't take the roof box they will just put you on the earliest train anyway.

Bit of a pain for us as there were 3 vehicles in our group, we had to wait for a the next train with the taller ceiling as we were at 2m, so the other 2 went on ahead and had to wait 20 minutes when they got off in Calais.
