Solden, Saalbach or Mayrhofen

I went to Solden at the same time last season and the snow conditions were excellent. A big, lively, strung out and not terribly convenient town but a much bigger ski area than the map suggests. The Giggijoch gondola has terrible queues in the morning, but the Gaislachkogel gondola has very little queuing and gets you into the heart of the ski area much more efficiently. Stay on the ski bus and avoid Giggijoch in the morning. The glacier ski area is massive and you get a sense of real travel with a long, long run back to town at the end of the day. I stayed in the hamlet of Zwieselstein, which avoided the noise and bustle of Solden itself and is quite convenient for the obligatory day trip to Obergurgl. You can also try Kuhtai or Hochotz for more ski variety - all easily accessible by regular buses. I thought the skiing was better, more extensive and more interesting than Saalbaach - and at mugh higher altitude, of course.
I think the topic headline and intro are misleading; the ESF are not seeking to distance themselves at all from the court ruling. The last paragraph makes it perfectly clear the ESF supports the court's decision.

Had a look at Flumserberg for a possible short trip. There were no direct trains from the airport but that shouldn't be a problem as there's a good service from the airport to main Zurich railway station and on to the station directly at the bottom of the gondola at Unterterzen. This takes you up to Tanneboden and onwards into the ski area. You can be in the ski area in 80 to 90 mins from the airport, if it all works and you time it right. For more railway info: http://www.sbb.ch

It's a popular resort with Zurich-ers at weekends, we were told, but quiet otherwise. A small area but perfectly ok for a weekend or three/four days etc. I'd very much like to hear your views, Ginnie, when you return.
Sarajevo? I saw an article a few years back that showed RAF helicopters flying around the surrounding mountains with the skiing infrastructure in ruins.

Glad to hear it's a viable ski destination once more! :P

Warmth has never been an issue inside a properly-fitted boot; but comfort is key. As Tony says, gathering causes hot spots, hot spots can cause blisters and raw patches, which often equal misery, I wear a clean pair of thin Thorlos every day although I bought an excellent brand in Tahoe a few seasons ago - Wigwam - which I take as spares.
