I'm not sure following the locals always works - in French resorts I've seen a number of them paying in vouchers - presumably to allow differential pricing to fleece the tourists but keep the locals happy.

Not sure if that quite fits in with EU regs.

I'm passing on second hand comments here from friends who have been skiing in Bulgaria.
1 couple who have skied im most of the major European resorts said they'd rather not ski than go back to Bulgaria (& we shared a cow shed in Norway with them).

Another said they found it OK but don't take your own gear in case it gets nicked.

Another went several times, although a few years ago now & loved the place.

I guess your experience depends on what your expectations are, whether you get a good hotel and perhaps who you go with! Bulgaria isn't Italy.
Ski gear in Aldi Monday 27th

Surprizing as it may seem the quality of Aldi ski gear is better than you might anticipate. (Presumably cheapo German is better than cheapo UK)
My first Jacket & Salopettes came from Aldi - I've still got the Jacket (which is more than I can say for some of the more expensive ones I've had since) although the diet rendered the salopettes obsolete.

Dry slopes tend to be more like carpet these days than the bristle chequerboard pattern that was prone to snagging thumbs.

Whilst they are not as nice to ski on as snow they are fine for getting the basics and certainly cheaper than the snowdomes. I guess it depends on where you live & what's available - you could have your basic lessons on dry & then a couple of goes on artificial snow before you go. that way you'll get more from your holiday.
Once I had been skiing on snow I couldn't enjoy dry slopes any more.
I guess piste colour doesn't really indicate risk of avalanche. (Although it would be a bit daft to develop a busy run of any colour in a high risk site)but even relatively low risk areas can be affected if the conditions are that way.
First time in Avoriaz

I guess it depends on how far you plan to ski & exactly how far the local pass allows - you can go for miles from Avoriaz.
