:DHi again,

Sorry only a short post last time i wasn't to flush for time...

In BsM you will also find three good supermarkets, Lidl ,SuperU & Intermarche (of the three SuperU is by far the most extensive in terms of items on offer), also there is Weldom's which is a bit like B'n'Q , and a variety of small local shops up th main pedestrian shopping street.

One of the main advantages of BsM is the fact that as it is a working town (population 6,200) the restaurant prices are not as high as those in the surrounding resorts, with the following being the best...

Ski Roc - home made ,while you wait burgers, lasagnes ,pizza's, pasta dishes etc ,traditional savoyarde cuisine at the Hostellerie du Petite Saint Bernard ,La Tarteflette ,Le Savoyarde and Le Rufuge 810m where you can still find three and four course meals with a bottle of wine and a brandy or genepi end your meal for between 16euro's and 20euros per head for a set menue, or picking from the menu between 16 euros up to 40 euro's.....and you will not have a bad meal in any of the above.

There is also the choice of Mexican ,Cantonese and Chinese and if you really are pushed there is a McD's........

Outside of town there is the delights of Le Ferme in Le Pre just above Villaroger ,and L'Ancolie a few minutes from Vallandry.....both of which have a justified reputation as two of the best places to eat anywhere. All the main restaurants should be pre booked in advance to be on the safe side ,with Ski Roc being ok to just walk into if they have room inside ,or there is seating outside.

The saturday market is a great place to while away a couple of hours, having a mooch around and then having a few coffee's or beers in the cafe on the corner next to the church and just watch the world go by.

As for night life ,the best places to drink are La Toneou (spelling is off,on the corner opposite the station), Bazoom for a more hip lively bar/restaurant with pool table, internet access and live bands, the Cafe' Fiore and le Tsablo. The Hotel/Bar 'Angival nehind the post office is also a good place to start off drinks for the evening, and also sometimes has a live band on (usually the local plumber/builder Andy),a good night out .

BsM has a lot to offer, and is definately somewhere to consider as a base for a few weeks holidaying at any time of the year......mind you I am slightly biased :D :D.

:DHello Kimmer, welcome to the forum,

You will find lots of good advice on the site with a very friendly helpfull bunch of fellow mountain lovers.

Congrats for choosing skiing as a holiday choice  there is almost no-one i know or have heard of going skiing for the first time who hasn't caught the bug big time and now goes every year....if you are a nutter like me I haven't sen a beach since my first trip many, many moons ago :D.

The best advice I can give (as with some of the previous replies) is choose a good reputable company, who offers beginners holidays, and look at resorts that have mainly blue/green slopes with some reds and skiing from 1600 mtetres up to and over 2800metres as this will ensure(in most cases) good snow.

Apart from the usual suspects in france etc, Austria and Switzerland have good resorts that aren't packed out in high season, and Switzerland is good value at the minute compared to the Eurozone resorts.

The main thing is to have fun and enjoy the surroundings and wherever you decide to go I bet money you will have a smile on your face, and will make it a regular feature each year.

All the best and happy skiing.

:DHi,

Serre Che is a great resort, with a very good snow record, it comprises four areas and is only a short drive from Montenevre and the franco/Italian border and from there you can ski into Claviere in Italy.

The town itself retains it's traditional features which can be non exsistant in some french resorts ,which adds to the charm .The last time i stayed there was 8 - 10 years ago now and went with a company called Ski Miquel,at their chalet in Monetier.

The area has skiing for all abilities with a few goos blacks dotted around. The last person to post a really good thread about Serre Che was Tony_H i think (from the season just gone) so he may well offer his always excellent advice....

One of the best resorts in france in my humble opinion.
