Hiya,

I know it seems to be the attitude of " take 'em for everything they've got " but there are still cheaper alternatives I guess.....depending on when you go and if you have any kind of flexibility......you can still get return flights for most places at around £70 each, car hire £170 ish for a week ( or return transfer with say BensBus at about £73 each, normal transfer schedule buses roughly the same ) and if you don't mind self catering a weeks acommadation for around £300 - £400 p/w.

I find the killer is the Lift Pass price now for families I'm afraid, which now I think is the number 1 deciding factor for a family of 4, if the lift pass companies realized this they would drop thier prices , gain more visitors and therefore keep the same profit margins, whilst helping local businesses with the extra tourism .

The Swiss Gov't have recently decided to raise the Vignette price to 100Fr. No definite implementation date yet, might be 2015, or if there will be the option of a short term Vignette for Tourists.

Hi,

If anyone needs info about getting back into Geneva Airport Frenchside without getting stung for the " Vignette " Pm or email me and I'll give the route, I have posted it few times previously on other threads. Once I've got my new website up and running...the next time I go out to Bourg-st-Maurice I'm going to try and record the whole journey on videocamera and then create a weblink for people to watch......will need 2 - 1/2 hours worth of beer and snacks though :-)

I must be doing something very wrong

I put in that I'd pick the car up at Geneva airport, Swiss side (I didn't know which side was cheapest but I had to put something), on 13th January and return it on 20th January and I wanted a family size car.

The cheapest car that came up was a VW Golf and it was £293 for the week

I think maybe I'd better stick to the train

And thanks Bandit for explaining what the road tax meant :D

Hi ,

No worries, sometimes it can be better to ring them up, the French or swiss side shouldn't matter pricewise, the only difference is that hiring from the Swiss side you will automatically get winter tyres fitted ( possibly chains included as well )...from the french side they are something you need to request seprately once at the desk.

All the best jon.
Winter Tyres and Chains

Far Queue wrote:I would like to make a comment about the company mentioned in the link above.

Both myself and a friend had issues when we tried to use them to buy tyres and wheels online a few years ago. They refused to accept a credit card (even though the website accepted it for the order) and contacted us directly to state the card had been declined and to insist we either used a debit card or transferred the money via bacs. I smelt something fishy so pulled out of the order as did my friend, especially as we did not want to lose the protection of using a credit card. Further checks with my credit card revealed they had not even tried to put the charge on it.

After doing further research, I found several stories of people being forced to pay the same way they wanted us to, and then not receiving their orders, either at all or until well into the following season making the order next to useless.

Just want to give people a heads up of how I was treated, that's all.

Cheers for the heads up....in that case I will use Kwik-Fit, went into see them and they could do the Continental TS800 winter tyres ( 175/70/R14 ) supplied, balanced and fitted for about £69 ish, which considering my mileage should last me 3 - 4 seasons.....better than a big insurance claim I think.

Cheers once again

Les Arcs information

Yes I would say les Arcs would be fine, but would recommenb they stay in either Arc 2000 or Arc 1950 if both are looking for wide, relatively easy flattering runs, with options for something a little more challenging slightly further afield over the 1600/1800 Peisey-Vallandry side.

All the best

Just watch the last bit of skiing back into 1950 though. It's a real bun fight where the piste narrows just above the village. When we were there (early March), the pistes were pretty scalped and icy. The easier route for the more cautious skier, would be to ski back into Arc 2000 and then catch the short gondola ride into 1950.

Yes this can be quite true at peak times, I would suggest (as with manyFrench resorts plan to go mid to late January, or my top tip see what the conditions are like after easter and go during the last two weeks of the season at that particular resort....I usually go to Les Arcs in the last two weeks of the season and more often than not bet excellent conditions, and it's like having your own personal ski resort :-)
