How tight should Ski Boot Buckles be?
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 10 Replies
:D hi,with a modern clip boot you should aim to have the clips over the bridge of the foot and the ankle clip fairly tight as this will keep your heel into the back of the boot and the soles of your feet flat onto the sole of the boot, the clips over the toes should not be overtight so you cannot wiggle your toes( this is one of the reasons peolpe complain that thier feet are cold because they have restrictid the blood supply to the toes),as for the clips on the shin and the strap-when the top clip is tightened you should be able to insert a fore fingure down the front and then do the strap pretty well as tight as it will go,if the top clip on the shin is too tight this squashes the calf muscle and tendon and this is why you get cramp and pins and needles.
Also when you are fitted for ski boots make sure you wear proper ski socks or a thick pair of walking socks( i find woolen walking socks to be very good)and try and take the time to find a boot that is as snug as possible as you can always loosen the clips slightly ,but if you get a boot that is slightly loose to start with you will not have that option.

:D, Hi all i agree, although i own a place in Bourg-St-maurice if i decide to ski anywhere else during my ski trips apart from Ste.Foy the only other places i choose to go are strangely concidered the lesser resorts of L'espace Killy, Le Fornet and Tignes Le Brevieres. When in fact these two are the hidden gems of the ski area, has anyone over the last 3-6years not been worried by the vast building expansion of Tignes and Val D'isere?,so it is nice that Le Fornet and Le Brevieres has resisted the temptation to over expand (although this is probably down to thier geographic positions-thank god) and to retain the small alpine village feeling that other resorts try so hard to make.

:D hi, thats ok,thats a good point about the hiring of cars on the french side, as you have to check for/request snow tyres and ask for snow chains to be supplied at extra cost.

:D hi,if you are looking to get away for four days or so please check out my link, i have just booked a long weekend for myself (going end of the month) with return flight from luton - geneva for £60.98p with Easyjet, and four days car hire through Autoeurope-0800 169 9797 for £84.Geneva airport is fine to drive from the french side as long as when you return you come off the A40 entering geneva and take the A411(this will take you into geneva centre and along by the lake back to the airport so you do not have to pay the 30euro charge for the luxury of driving down a 3mile stretch of swiss motorway).
But obviously where you decide to ski will depend on what time of year and where has the best conditions ,also your girlfriend should not put herself off skiing due to a previous accident as she will miss out on a great deal of fun.
many regards

hi : :D ,did not say where you are from but you could try- Two Seasons, they have stores in the following places, cambridge, coventry, derby, leamington spa, leicester, lichfield, northampton, nottingham, peterborough, solihull, worcester. also nearer the season you can also buy ski jackets, gloves salopettes etc from certain aldi stores.
The clothing does not have to be expensive, the main thing is water repellancy and breathability whilst staying dry.
hope this is of some use .
have a great time .

What ski`s to buy??

:) hi,the type of skis you purchase will depend on the level of skier you are now but more importantly the type of skier you expect to be with regards to on/of piste ,as if you buy a ski for your level now in a couple of seasons you may well have outgrown the usefulness of the ski,for your height i would not suggest a length of more than 170 -176cm,Salamon do an excellent range of skis as they are light ,strong flexible and and with good edge hold. But with regards to skis and boots the most important of the two is a good comfortable pair of boots,if the boots hurt then it will not matter how good the skis are ,so if you are thinking of buying your own kit i would purhaps suggest buying a good pair of boots (some good ones can be had for under £200, with a good upper intermediate boot for £220 -£280) and think about the skis in a season or two.

:) hi,the most common injury when skiing is a sprained or broken thumb, this is caused when the skier falls forward and outs thier hands out to stop thier fall and as the hand is usually through the wrist strap so when hitting the ground the thumb is on one side of the pole and the other four fingures are on the other. so while your girlfriend is getting use to skiing if she avoids putting her hands through the wrist straps to begin with she should be fine ( but when polling along must make sure she keeps a good hold of it otherwise it can be left behind.hope this is of use and hope yo both have a plesent ,enjoyable trouble free trip.
