Went to Val di Fassa this february half term!
We stayed in the pozza area which was very quiet to be honest! I had some great advantages like the fact that when skiing in that area we didn't cue for a single lift! And i mean literally not a single! The first day we arrived at the gondola base at about 9 and there was nobody else there in the lift cue! It was fantastic! It also meant obviously that the slopes were empty! The downside could be seen that there isn't much nightlife but that didn't bother our group as were in the hotel every evening! From Pozza i skied upto the marmolada and the val gardena area! I enjoyed both these days especially the marmolada trip which was essentially non-stop skiing from about 8.30 till 5.30! It is very easy to access the gardena area from pozza in two ways! One is to get the free skibus to campitello and ski over or start skiing at pozza at the buffaurae (sp) gondola and ski over to alba then taking the 5 minute bus ride down to canazei and then gondola up, down to the canazei/campitello crossover and gondola to the top of campitello then ski down into selva etc! I very much enjoyed the area it has some stunning and miles upon miles of runs. the snow wasn't fantastic when we were there and it was quite warm! I am also lead to believe that the area doesn't receive as good snow as other areas of the alps but i think i would definetly go back again! Chris Here's a link to show how empty the "pozza" slopes are! http://s337.photobucket.com/albums/n376/skiareas/Italy/Val%20di%20Fassa/?action=view¤t=IMG_1808.jpg |

Or there's also courmayeur!? Village is quite lower then the slopes so generally get better snow up there! Also get the added bonus of your lift pass covering you for la thuile and chamonix!Tis about 1 1/2-2 hours from turin and roughly the same coming from geneva!

My biggest magic moment came this season!
It was during the UK easter holidays, which was begining of april! We went on a school skiing trip to Wagrain, Austria! When we arrived there was no snow in the valley whatsoever! And when we went to the hill on the first day the run down to the bottom was maintained purely by man made snow! The first day was good but quite slushy most of the time due to the warm weather! The next morning our teacher knocked on our door to check we were awake and told us to look out the window! It was snowing outside and clearly had been for quite sometime! About a foot of snow at the village height! It was going to be a good day! We started our lessons that morning and for about an hour or so our instructor was making us do technical exercises! I think we all knew that he didn't want to be doing them in these conditions and neither did we! So he took us back up to the top and into the trees! Up until this holiday i'd never really given off piste skiing a try! Give me any grade of slope and im fine off piste just didn't appeal! But today was different! I'd never had conditions to ski in like this before except my first trip in Winter Park but i was just a meere learner! Our instructor taught us the technique of skiing the trees and we just had fun all day in them! This then continued for most of the week! It was our instructor's last season as he was going back to Holland as a pro basketball coach so just wanted to have fun all week! a video of our first day in the trees can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DM85LfiLUA I'm the first skier you see come down! To me that was the best and most memorable skiing holiday i've ever been on and i'm glad i'm only 17 and will have many many more to come! Chris |

Tony yes i know Le Grave is no use for my parents! )
Thanks for that iLoveSkiing! Proves quite useful i'll let my parents know when we're over that heading up to the glacier is probably their best bet! Especially if its not overly crowded! Thats the sort of thing they love! In terms of off-piste, over then Le Grave is there a fair bit to be found in Deux Alpes?? Cheers |
