Ski helmets for kids
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 3 Replies
My reaction from having bought a few helmets for my two kids, is go to the shop and TRY them on for comfort and perfect fit...that'll narrow-down the choices considerably....then choose the coolest style/colour from what's left.

From my experience you'll have a choice of one or two brands that fit properly and then a choice of one or two colours offered by the brand.

Kids' head shapes vary greatly and so just because a brand has got cool designs doesn't mean it'll keep them safe. My suggestion: If you go for fairly plain colours then you can always add 'decals' to personalise.

(It must be nearly Autumn as I'm starting to read J2Ski again)

dizziness, stars in the eyes, loss of vision and hearing...consequences of not drinking water in the mountain for me...
so I always carry a re-fill bottle of tap water.

What about eating snow...bad for you or not? Of course assuming you avoid the yellow snow.
I'm not looking at La Plagne yet

honest!
Rate the resorts you've visited.

the very nature of a forum like this inevitably attracts opinionated people

You do see the irony of that posting, I assume?

I would be interested in others' lists. But it has to have context about 'them'. There is no point in me following the 'recommendation' of a black loving, beer swilling, boarder who loves Italy. If I'm a blue loving, T-total, skier who has racist tendencies against Italians [I don't btw :!: ].

But someone who seeks a similar set of criteria to me would be interesting (to me.)

For example if someone shares their list but places my no.1, no.2, no.3 as their no.2, no.3, no.4 then I would *probably* love to visit their no.1. (and vice versa)

It's not about trying to sway anyone's opinion or oneupmanship.

This proven by the thread replies and PM replies that I have received which say "wow, we're so similar in what we seek", for those people they will *probably* love my top 5 places.

I do agree however that 9/10 type ratings don't really mean very much except to give a 'value order' to the list itself.

Here goes:

1st La Plagne (Fr) rating 9/10
2nd Meribel (Fr) rating 9/10
3rd Val Thoren (Fr) rating 9/10
4th Alpe D'huez (Fr) rating 8/10
5th Streamboat (US) rating 7/10
6th Brekonridge (US) (long time ago 20 yrs!) rating 7/10
7th Tignes (Fr) rating 7/10
8th Les Deux Alpes (Fr) rating 6/10
9th Chamrouse (Fr) rating 5/10
10th Snowy Range (US) rating 3/10

These following three are too long ago to have relevance today!
Courmayeur (It)
Zell-am-See (Aus)
Borovets (Bul)

About me:
Been skiing 15 times over 30 yrs.
I seek speed and mileage
I love to chill out on really long cruising blues
Ski both on my own and with family (kids 9/11)
Like France, like the French (and so offended at some prejudice comments made by some ;-) )

I avoid moguls and really 'scary' blacks if I can, but will do them if necessary
I never go off-piste
I do not like snowboarders
I do not like queues
I will never play in a snow park (rails/jumps etc)

La Plagne
Pros
vast area
plus linked with Les Arcs in addition (Paradiski)
has loads of blues
high-level and trees

Cons
Not a quaint village
Not a fantastic link to Les Arcs

Meribel
Pros
massive area when linked with 3V
ideally placed in the 3V

Cons
Expensive for lift pass if you are not a high distance skier.
A few lift bottle necks.

Val Thoren
Pros
massive area when linked with 3V

Cons
bleak & cold in bad weather
a long way to the far side of 3V - start worrying about getting back
a few lift bottle necks

Alpe D'huez
Pros
big area

Cons
none really, just not as big as Paradiski or 3V

Steamboat
Pros
Better snow

Cons
long way from UK
cold
altitude issues

Brekonridge
Pros
Better snow

Cons
long way from UK
cold
altitude issues

Tignes
Pros
It had snow
(harsh, but it didn't win me over, sorry)

Cons
Just didn't open itself to me as a good resort on its own
Not as well connected to Val D'Isere as I imagined

Les Deux Alps
Pros
Glacier accessible to all abilities

Cons
Felt small, did seem any real wide choice of runs
Completely horrible for beginners to get back to town.

Chamrouse
Pros
Sorry really didn't like it.

Cons
Slow lifts
Cloudy for a few days
Rained for a day
Small, limited, bored within a day (hey, I'm grateful & privileged that I could go, but wouldn't go back unless it was the only thing on offer in France)

Snowy Range
Pros
great for learning

Cons
long way to go from UK
wouldn't go their just for this 'resort' (we were staying woth family who lived 30 mins away)
I think it has since closed down!!

****
other notes:
I think crowded slopes are less about resort and more about time of year and knowledge to avoid bottle necks (most have them). Although 3 Valleys can suffer quiet badly.

I haven't rated food or prices. The differences in reality are not really that big between European Countries or USA. Family of Four lunch say £30-£50 evening say £60-£100. There can be more variation within one resort than from one resort to another.

If you're after cheap food then I would recommend
Vietnam...
Pro
£8 for 2-course meal with drinks for family of four.

Con
no ski resorts

Thing is, how can they actually fine her? Its all well and good sending her a letter telling her they propose to fine her, but how do they enforce it?

you answer it yourself
you wrote: it would need to go to court to be potentially enforced

that's precisely what they will do, no different from any other statutory fine (say speeding or parking or litter dropping or smoking).

They don't have to issue the letter, that part is at their discretion, but once they have I suspect its too late..start preparing a defence (or pay-up).
