Severe Weather Warning For The Alps
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 9 Replies
Hi All,

Those whom subscribe to the J2SKI emails for the Weather Updates will have got the warning, for those that don't basically the temps will nose dive this week and through next weekend.

I have just double checked with Snow-Forecast for my local area ( Les Arcs ) and temps will be down to around -35oC with the windchill.

The link for Snow-Forecast is http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Les-Arcs/6day/bot .....

Just pick your chosen resort from the menu, please all take care when going out this week, and indeed all weeks of the season, and keep an extra eye on the little helmeted gromets if you have any.

Plenty of factor 30 and over and a balaclava might be a good investment for the next few weeks.

Stay safe and enjoy.

Living in or near mountains.

Hi Crispy,

Sorry for being a little late to this thread, although not actually working in the Alps. I do own an apartment in Bourg-St-Maurice which allows me as much time as I can afford ( both financially and in actual time itself ).

I manage to get out several times a year when possible, here in the UK I work as a coded welder which offers pretty good pay for where I live and very good benefit's and bonuses ....but not a fortune by any standards.

The company I work for ( German by the way ) does have a manufacturing facility in Romans in France so I suppose I could look for a transfer to be nearer the mountains  .

The apartment cost me around £32,000 in 2003 , today it would be maybe £80,000 , but there are still many bargains for studio apartments and larger in the area.

At the time it did seem like a big chance and a big step to take , but over the years has proved to be a peaceful get away, and with flights+car hire for a week at around £170 for the two quite cheap once the original outlay has been sorted out.

Would I do it again , and in these uncertain times........????

.....yes I believe I would.

All the best, and whenever you are out in the mountains enjoy and be safe.

CAR HIRE - NEED LOCAL HIRE SHOPS
Started by User in France, 1 Reply
Hi,

Europecar have an office in La Plagne Center.....

http://www2.europcar.co.uk/rental-stations/la-plagne-altitude-station-car-hire/index.html

For good price car hire I use Autoeurope from geneva , www.auto-europe.co.uk / 0800 169 9797.

Would probably be better to ring and book with Autoeurope , it's always better to speak to a human being than book some things via the internet , just to make sure.

Hope this helps.

Need help

Hi ,

You could try the following.....

http://www.loftbourg.com/
http://www.miquelhols.co.uk/
http://www.chillchalet.com/index.htm

These are all pretty good value and you can fly to Geneva and Grenoble airports for around £60 - £80 return, and BensBus ( http://www.bensbus.co.uk/ ) will do a return from these airports to Bourg-St-Maurice/Les Arcs for £73 return.

Might be worth a look,

All the best

drivers

1. Why don't people read the instruction when they put them on instead of letting them snap or come off while driving

2. Why do BMW drivers try to get uphill without chains and end up getting towed?

3. Why do some 'local' drivers seem think it is ok to race down a snowy road and overtake on the outside of a bend with cars coming the other way?

4. At what stage do you take the chains off?

Safe journey to all those going back today, and for the guy who just passed us with his rear wheel wobbling, don't use luck - use a spanner!!!!

Hi, Iceman...

In answer to your thoughts may I offer my own :D ..

1- Lack of foresight and thought, and maybe they think yes we will take them , but we wont need them ....bad move, practice before you go is my answer.

2- As Mr Clarkson says on many occasions , BMW's are driven by c***s ( mind you it's changed to Audi drivers now I think ? )...it's the I have an expensive German car, I should be able to go anywhere syndrome.....again in the winter....delusional I fear.

3- In my part of the Alps ( Tarentaise/Savoie ) tail-gating seems to be a national sport , which is undertaken by those whom consider dents in their car/s as badges of honor, drive slower it annoys the hell out of them :D ......your life is more important than the idiot doing the tail-gating :D

4- Chains should be taken off when the road has insufficient snow/ice cover ( when the road is pretty much clear to be honest ), if you continue to use chains when the road is clear you will eventually destroy your tyre's rubber and in many cases the road surface ( this is the advantage of snow/winter tyre's , you do not have to keep taking them on and off when the road gets clear again only to put them back on further up or down the road ).....but in many countries even if you have winter tyre's it's still a legal requirement to have chains ).

Coach from London to Resort

You can then either repeat in reverse or take a TGV to Paris and get to London early evening.

Hi,

I agree take the Eurostar, leaves London St.Pancras Friday night and
and will take you direct to the Tarentaise stopping at Bourg-St-Maurice.

The overnight goes all the way through, think it stops at Moutiers and Aime then onto BsM, have had a place in BsM since 2003 but always Drive or Fly-Drive so plans permitting hoping to do the Train this season.

Think the price for standard seat etc is around £160 return pwer person, which isn't bad at all , and you do get a day or so extra skiing which is a bonus.
