Dave Mac wrote:I found Finnish (phrase book stuff) difficult. Many words have lots of side by side vowels, and each is pronounced separately. The one word I can remember was, I think, kiiota, pronounced kee-ee-oh-ta.

Also did five years of Latin study. I thik it is fair to say, that is the worst way I have wasted time, since I have never used it.

I bought a Finnish phrase book last year but could'nt really get on with it. I just could not pronounce the same as they do. But found a nod and a smile went a long way. Going around the supermarkets the names of some of their things........hilarious and too rude for this forum, we sounded like Beavis and Butthead sniggering around the aisles.
I too wasted time on learning Latin but there are occasions I need it, in my job but only text book stuff really.

What would you take for Christmas?

I have wanted to be away at Christmas for years but as long as I am working in a retail environment its never going to happen. No holidays in December thats the contract rules for every-one. But I am sure I would treat it as any other ski day. Except a small gift each and a more luxurious dinner.

You laugh at a BBQ and sausages, well we actually do take sausages and some rolls in our rucksacks. In Finland every so often is a Kota with a blazing fire and a kettle and toasting forks and we warm up, cook our sausages and have hot dogs. Heat up some hot berry juice, get warm and then off we go again.

Salski I think it was you that put me onto The Lapland forum. Log on there and you will be amazed at what some of those people manage to stash away in their cases. I still cant believe what they take.

Try learning Finnish. Its a language I shall never understand and nearly every-one speaks it in Finland, very little English. But we get by, although have had a few errors on food so in resteraunts I look over at what other people are eating and if it looks good I just say I'll have some of that. All adds to the fun. Mind you my latins not bad as its not really a spoken language.
Sweden or Norway

Not been to Norway or Sweden but hoping to visit Sweden in January. I imagine quite expensive as its neighbour Levi/Ruka/Yllas. Alcohol and eating out is very expensive, supermarkets if you are prepared to eat whay the locals eat not so bad, but branded goods very expensive.
