Carving Tuition - Has to be seen!!!
Started by User in Ski Technique, 43 Replies
Just got back from a week in Mayrhofen which was family based so due to the variance in the ability of the 3 families that went I tended to try and improve the quality of my skiing as opposed to putting vast amounts of mileage under my belt.
Having looked at the DVD numerous times and even took it with me I found it fantastic tool to explain certain things to four 13-16 years old who were all on their 3rd/4th skiing trips. I found the hints and the drills Klaus Mair mentioned in relation to weight distribution, leaning forward and basic body position were very usefull. I was delighted to see how all their skiing dramatically improved without them having any lessons. If I thought that my input thanks to the tips in Klaus Mair's DVD had any baring in this I will be very proud.
Did it improve my skiing, very hard for me to say, as it was not always appropriate for me to ski off on my own and do the more challenging stuff. That being said it has made me more aware of my own faults and although I still found myself doing them I straight away had this 'nagging person' on my shoulder saying 'lean forward' 'Use your outside ski' and 'Face the danger'.

I am off with some friends to Schladming at he end of January and they know my strengths and weaknesses so that will be my Litmus test.

In short ladies and gents I would thoroughly recommend the DVD which comes with 3 reminder cards which you can stick in your ski jacket pocket so you can have a quick browse over a pint over lunch to make it look as if you know more than you really do!! )

Paul Cng. Good luck to you mate!!
I thought I had problems with my right boot after 2-3 hours!!
I am not even going to even try and discuss the physics and chemistry as to why you or may not be able to affect meaningful and deliberate carving!!

I am a mature good intermediate skier nothing more, but have recieved no formal instruction in over 20 years, in other words since carvers came on the scene. Started again 5 years ago and basically made it up as I went along. Desperate to try and improve I stumbled across the link I mentioned in the thread shown below
Skiing techniques- Carving Tution- It has to be seen

Have a look and see if you can see any reason why your condition wont allow you to adapt it to carving.

It seemed to make things simply explained and as a result I bought the DVD- SOFA SKI SCHOOL from Blue to Black Diamond.

One of the Chapters it discusses is carving as shown on the link. I found the whole DVD very worthwhile and would recommend it to anyone from intermediate to that breed of us who are good intermediates but have inherited some bad habits which make it hard for us to perfect our art as well as we would like on the steeps.

This is only a suggestion there are alot more qualified than me that use this forum.

What ever the outcome, enjoy yourself!!

Was in Mayrhofen for Xmas with 2 other families including my 'Bestman' who I have not holidayed with since we were single 21+ years ago. A great time was had by all, but nothing will beat the look on his face when on Xmas day his wife told him that his Xmas present was a week in Schladming at the end of January with me and a group of similar mature skiers. We had managed to conspire for quite some time to keep it from him. The smile on his face when he read it and let it sink in was priceless!! I am not one for beat that but anyone who can will be doing very well!!!
I just hope my Mrs takes note for me for next year, but then again she does let me go for a week with the boys each year so I should not be greedy!! )
footbed?

I have posted on here before about long standing problems with my boots and in particular my right foot!! Crushing, pins and needles sensation after about 2-3 hours wearing them. Suprise suprise it happened again the beginning of last week in Mayrhofen where I again was having to take my boot off every 2 hours or so just for a minute to relieve the discomfort and then suffered for about 30 seconds pins and needles when the blood returned to the rest of the foot.
Cem this seeemd to stop after about the 4th day, now was it my foot had just given up trying to tell me I was damaging it, or could it have been the fact that I had to loads of walking in Mayrhofen to the gondollas and chalet there with the damn things on that even though the boots are 3 years old that I have finally broken in the foot beds to the proper shape of my foot. I keep my fingers crossed that this is the case as I am off back to Austria for a cheeky week at the end of January!!
mayrhofen beer !!!

Just got back from Mayrhofen today, fear not the beer prices are moderate both on and off the mountain. E2.20 - E2.60 for a small to E3.60 - 4.00 for a large one. Now baring in mind the really poor exchange rate of the £ it could be worse. Live in London so normal pub prices really!! When I take into account I was paying E5 for a large beer on a camp site bar in France in the summer I dread to think how much it is for beers in the French Alps.
Found spirits/mixes abit exy and the price of food on the mountain was a little more than I have been used to when skiing the last 4 years in Schladming but that being said they were not unreasonable.
Enjoy your trip and I hope your group all have heads for heights in gondallas!!! Streuth!!
Just to clarify my last note the Ahorn Abfahrt which is a good red which runs from the Ahorn down to the bottom back to the big gondolla at town level was open and I was skiing down it yesterday. Yes its got snow canons helping it and has a few icy patches and the pistes on it vary in consistancy but it was a good 'ride'. From what those in the know were saying when I left there was no more snow due in the immediate future howver it was forecast to be very cold so fear not and enjoy your trip.
Just got back from Mayrhofen this afternoon and got a ton of things to do. Will be more precise later however have no fear theres plenty of snow on the pistes.Yes its forecast sunny for a while but very cold. Snow has cleared from the town but that is not unusual. More detail to follow!! Bags to unpack
Depending on what you want and your age etc!! Its not club city but Schladming is only just over an hour from Salzburg. Fantastic skiing unless you are an adrenalon junkie as not that many challenging blacks.
Nice place full of character Good apres but not madness. A few Brits about but not hoards.
You can get a train from Salzburg to Scladming 1hr 15 min and and costs about £20. Airport to station 20 minutes on a tram door to door. There were tranfers buses from Schladming to the airport but they are scheduled more around German flights.
Have a look at he link below

Would say contact me again if you want more details however on my way to Mayrhofen 4 Xmas 2morrow, but will be off to Schladming for a week end of January 09!!!
