Les Arc 1950

I went to 1950 with a couple of beginners last season.

All the restaurants were very good - but get very busy so definetly recomend you book your table in advance unless you are prepared to wait or be very flexible in your dining times!

The small supermarket in the village had a good choice of things to if you have a self catering apartment (you can also oreder your rotiseri chicken to collect at the end of the day if you like that sort of thing).

Our beginners started on the blues of the St Jacques 33 chirlift just above Arc 2000 - loveky wide and easy (but that chair is damn slow!), but within a couple of days they were happily tackling the blues down from L'Arpette & Col de la Chal. They found the Cascades run down from 1950 to be a little intimidating at first as it can get a bit bumpy at times and there was a lot of very fast traffic on it. The Pre Saint Esprit39 chair back up is also one of the slowest I've ever encountered (and the queues if the higher lifts are closed are a nightmare - unless they have put in a new fats one for this season ?), The Comborcier 41 chair from the same point is a lot quicker, but links you over to Arc 1600 rather than taking you home.

P.S. And ignore any comments about 'Arc Disney' from other skiers - there just jealous!

P.P.S. If any of you are intermediate skiers then it's definetly worth taking the chance to head over to Villaroger and stop of at Soliet restaurant for lunch.

European mailorder company, they do a skiwear range once a year - when it's gone it's gone.

Ok stuff if you don't want to spend a fortune and decent quality.

Oh and as another poster mentioned watch out for the link to Pontedilegno - if you have beginners/timid skiers with you it's probably better to cut the run at the mid station of the return gondola.

The final section is quite a bit tougher than the easy blue cruise down to that point - and the chair at the end if you miss the turning is an old slow 2 seater which leads on to what can be a very busy (and icy) red/black combination!

The green/blue slopes behind Tonale itself though were really nice for bringing on and confidence building in beginners and near beginners. The reds though a bit steeper were very wide and most folks in the group were happy to attempt them by the end of the 4 days.

Some of the fast chairs behind Tonale are covered which helps when the weather closes in a bit (and I seem to remember heated to - or maybe hat was the new one in Zell am See - old age is creeping up on me and the memory is going!).
