Apologies, you are correct, I didn't explain the DIY. The logic is simply that there is a higher level of DIY in Ischgl, thereby putting pressure on accommodation, compounded by this being the holiday period.

Chris,
Your OP asks about Christmas or New Year. Austria is a strongly Catholic country, and for Christmas, the emphasis is on church service and family. At New Year, you can expect great firework celebrations. A Tour operator would be a good start place. Although I do DIY in Austria every season, be careful at Christmas/New Year. Ischgl is a favourite with Germans, and they arrive both by car and public transport. PT at NY is very, very crowded. Not just standing all the way, but standing on your luggage, which you have already positioned ontop of your mate. I'm not sre you need to consider driving elsewhere. there are 240km of pistes. the ski bus links with Galtur and Kappl. Have a look at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/snowandski/austria/ischgl/6726486/Ski-Ischgl-resort-guide.html |

Good start point is Skiset, LHS of page. It doesn't seem to be giving info on dates, so you may have to leave it to nearer the time.

Well done for highlighting the DEC appeal, Admin. The DEC do a good job, and have a modest administrative cost base. This is a most worthy cause for those of us who are mountain orientated.
I confess that a shiver ran through me, in that my journalist son has done a report from Everest base camp, and, what if thoughts go through your mind. He also was in Indonesia, reporting on the Tsunami, and several other countries with dodgy problems. In the early 1990s I was working in Kenya, Rwanda and Burundi. A week after I returned from Burundi, the Tutsi/Hutu war started, and up to 100,000 people were killed, including anyone who was nearby. Engineers on the plants that I worked in lost their lives. Rwanda was a similar near miss. In Kenya, violence was endemic. It is a bit of a cruel world sometimes. So, in our relatively safe world, maybe we should give what we can. |

These Australians know a thing or two about Europe, nicht war?
I watched a BASI video taken on Cairngorm today, plenty deep, but perhaps a bit heavy, ~ good knees required! |

Agreeing with VSB and LOTA. It always felt bad, season end, leaving white covered alps in late April.
Ski days shortened by heavy conditions didn't concern me, I just sat up the mountain and did some painting. Glencoe is good, just now. However, wind conditions remain strong over Scotland. We had thunder today. I have skied on Cairngorm in May. But there is one lady, who I think is approaching 4 years, having skied every month of the year. |

It's doing my head in. From the conservatory window, my local hill is covered in the white stuff.
Cairngorm is still operational. A friend posted to say that Glencoe is a dream. I really should be there. But I have kicked off several projects on my house, and these involve many hours of planning. All needs to be done, in order to earn enough brownie points for next seasons skiing..... Plus preparation for a weeks painting in the Lake District in just over a weeks time. It's a hard life. |
