Where to in Austria in early January?
Started by User in Austria, 68 Replies
Hi,

I also very much like the look of the following 2 ski areas:
Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis
Flachau-Zauchensee.
They regularly appear in top 5 Austrian skiing areas ranked by visitors.
However as far as I can tell there are no package holidays from UK.

Am I right?
Anybody been there?

Scarlet Fez wrote:We are booked into he Postwirt in Soll for a week on the 22nd of January. I know for a fact it is completely booked out then. Very nice place, not cheap but then again we have earnt a bit of luxury at our age!

Nice hotel.
Who knows, we may end up there on 8 January?

Scarlet Fez wrote:Have a look at the Alpenhotel-Neuwirt,Schladming. See reviews on Trip Advisor including mine. We went there 4 years running. Lovely place. Only negative is its 2Ks out of town. Thee are free coaches to the hotel but that then can dictate your Apres!! Depends what your group wants. If like us there is a bit of Juvenile in you then like us last year you may find Soll to your liking. I am not saying Schladming is quiet but in comparrison to other resorts the Apres is or was.

Scarlet,

Thanks for the hotel tip.
The location could be a bit of a problem, as
we do like a bit of apres )

Cheers,

Scarlet Fez wrote:We are a young at heart mature group of skiers. 40-50 yrs all of which can get about over most terrains. Been to Schladming numerous times, a hidden gem which is only just over an hour coach from Salzburg. It has its own station which goes direct to Salzburg. Excellent sking spolit for choice where to eat and drink. Apres is quite timid and not a big Brit/Irish resort but better for it. Went to Soll last year in late January, the snow was great and the Apres was more catered towards the Brit/Irish. We had a ball. Recommend both.

Hi Scarlet,

Thank you.
We are the same age group skiers )

Should I assume that you prefer Schladming?
I've heard they are further investing into their infrastructure for the Skiing World Championship 2013.
Can you recommend any hotels?

EmmaEvs wrote:I went to Kitz last year. I'm not an advanced skier so can't speak from that perspective, but the runs looked pretty diverse to me. There were definitely plenty of accomplished skiers/boarders happily whizzing around. And of course there's the Streif - if it's good enough for the World Cup downhillers it should be a challenge for most others. There are a few long blues, going into Kircheberg, and also one which goes from the top to bottom of the Horn on the other side of Kitz (the skibus takes 10mins). I think that one's supposed to be about 2 - 2.5 km or something.

It's not particularly cheap in Kitz (we stayed with the other peasants out of resort). Lifts are ok. Not sure if they're high speed or not, I just tend to get on/in and hope not to fall/drop skis/head butt someone rather than wonder how fast I'm going. There's also that really long one across the valley called S2, which links Kitz directly to Jochberg (?). Your lift pass should also cover you for the Pass Thurn area (skibus again).

Decent Apres Ski, lots of little indoor/outdoor bars, and the resort itself was quite picturesque and nice to have a wander around I thought. Scenery in the snowy mountains is always spectacular IMHO, or am I just easy to please?!

Sorry, I can't compare to Saalbach or the wider Ski Welt.

Hi Emma,

Thank you for a good report on Kitz )
It sound a nice enough a resort.
I was a bit worried as nobody has mentioned it before as an option for a January trip in this thread.
It is not my first or second choice of Austrian destinations, the 2 top spots being reserved for Arlberg and Gastein region, however should I not get a good late deal to those two I will certainly check out Kitz, Saalbach, Schladming and Ski Welt resorts.
As for the view you are right in saying it is beautiful in the mountains but I've heard that Jungfrau, Zermatt, Saas Fee, Chamonix and Val Gardenia sceneries are very special

Hi,

I also like the look of 3 long blue runs served by 3 gondolas in Kitzbuhel towards Kirchberg.

Can you please advice me on Kitzbuhel ski area?
In particular suitability for an advanced skier, Lifts, apres ski, resort charm and scenery?
How does it compare with Saalbach and Ski Welt areas?

Aus-tri-a! Aus-tri-a!

Hi Emma,

I have not abandoned my Austria plans
Just waiting for some more info on Flachau/Ramsau area from a friend.
Alternatively last minute Arlberg, Kitz or Gastein area :!:
I hope that we may be able to go skiing again later on in the season hence discussing other, inferior, destinations like Switzerland, Italy and France.
So see you in Austria.

Hi Bandit,

Just checked Inghams website and current brochure and it looks like they no longer go to CM

Biki17 you are correct, and my bathroom reading is out of date! I can find no UK based packages for C-M on Swiss Travel Service, Kuoni, Igluski, Crystal or DirectSki either.

If it's where you want to go, I suggest booking a flight to GVA and taking the train from the airport to Sierre, and then on up to C-M. You can book directly through the Tourist Office.

Or try booking.com, 26 hotels listed.

If you don't want to carry luggage, Swiss resorts usually have baggage delivery, depending on the carrier you use. A return rail Transfer Ticket booked in advance through these folks will cost around £75.
