La thuile to Courmayuer is doable, as not that far if they run regular buses, but to get over to Chamonix is another 40 mins or so...and then which lift..?
I think Chamonhx would have a congestion problem with the argentiere problem.

You could go the valle blanche from Courmayuer on an organised trip but you'd likely have to do it from Courmayuer in the first place.

If la ros, Courmayuer are your goals, then la thuile is the central position.

Thank you again, Sonofapreacher. I think it is going to be either La Ros or La Thuile snow and coronavirus permitting :) Will try to call La Thuile Tourist office to find out about bus service to/ from Courmayeur. Either location sounds very exciting. Have a happy Easter skiing everyone !

Sonofapreacher wrote:La Ros is not really accessible.
Chamonix through the tunnel or ski from helbronner via the vallee blanche, but youd have to get transport back to Courmayuer.

To have a chance to do that, you'd have to be located in La thuile or Courmayuer.

For me, the best lift in Chamonix is the Ag du midi. Argentiere without the bottom cable car (Fire damage) is a severe compromise so i cant see you driving all that way from Italy to do that..?

On another point, Monterosa goes high but the main weather comes up from the Med, so for me, the valley would be stellar if it had snow, but i was never that lucky in 5 years of trying.

Cervinia is also high and snow sure and has the link to Zermatt and whilst it is largely a piste resort, there are lots of avenues you can access for easy off piste. In that regard, a bit like La Ros. It depends how the Italians patrol off piste, in bounds.

Ok, so La Ros great base for Espace San Bernardo, La Thuile better base for a day trip to Courmayeur. I will bear in mind warning about Monterosa snow! Thank you again, Sonofapreacher.

Hi Sonofapreacher,
Thank you for more advice :)
At the moment we are considering both self-drive and flight options. It sounds like both bases in Espace San Bernardo are great options. We would also love to visit Courmayuer or Chamonix for a day or two if at all possible.

The col is a snow pocket and is the summer road to italy. It doesnt tend to get dug out until late May to june.
We never thought to go to La thuile from Courmayuer because Chamonix was too much of a calling. I think you can go a long way off the cresta from Courmayuer but not all the way to La Thuile, iirc, ..anyway we never looked seriously at those options.

If you look at snow level, Espace San bernardo consistently has amongst the highest in the region.
La Ros has chalet capacity, La thuile might be more hotels. Not sure about ths Operators.
For me, id consider leaving booking to see what the snow is doing. These last few years, snow has stuck around late, in a few places.

If you want height, Val T, if you must...the skiing saves it.

Thank you again Sonofapreacher :)
We will watch the snow closely.
My initial choice was Chamonix until I found out that the high lift was closed .
La Ros sounds good. For now it is our preferred choice, with Monterosa as an option.
Would prefer to avoid Val T. Visited from Courchevel some time ago. But snow holds there well of course. Montgenevre was also recommended to us in the past, but La looks better :) I wish everyone great Easter skiing !

daved wrote:O(f all the options put forward here I would choose Madonna ..great selection for everyone and it's Italy certainly better value than France..and I can recommend the Hotel Alpina ..stopped there last year ..good value and convenient..La Thuille is very nice but limited number of runs and its a bit low..Cervinia is OK but not very challenging .....Just my opinion

Hi Daved,

Thank you for your advice.
Would love to visit Madonna especially as we love main Dolomites area so much !
However I am concerned about snow conditions in April as the top lifts there go only to about 2600m while in La Rosiere up to 2800m now and in Monterosa even higher. Do you think there might be enough snow in Madonna at Easter ? Kind regards,

Sonofapreacher wrote:Skied Aletsch ..snow cover not great and area not really connected...plus it gets the crowds. Cran Montana good but south facing..Anniviers opposite is great but we had a car.

La thuile to Courmayuer is poss but check out buses/taxis.

Id choose La Ros over La Thuile...but mainly because we only did day trips to la thuile and you spend more time getting there so never have a full day that side. The Col distracts you..lol

Hi Sonofapreacher,

Great insight ! La Rosiere with La Thuile sounds great ! We will monitor snow reports closely :) I have heard good reports about Courmayeur. Perhaps a day trip option ?
Monterosa and Madonna have been on our list for a while but maybe it can wait ...

Many thanks !

andymol2 wrote:Would have thought that Passo Tonale might be a bit on the pudding side by Easter. The Glacier runs at Ponte-de-Legnio should be OK but the runs in Passo itself go soft very easily. Having been there later in the season I probably wouldn't choose it at that time of year. To be honest it's Ok for beginners or early intermediates (and those who don't like to get lost as most of the runs are off the main road)

Don't know about Madonna - had a day there but it was rtoo foggy to appreciate!

Hi Andymol2,

Thank you for your advice. We will give Passo Tonale a miss this time. Regards,
