I think that 90% (ish, about etc) of handling ice is in our heads. Its the fear of being out of control that causes most problems.
And ... We probably all work out our own way to handle ice. A mixture of kit (nice and sharp edges as Emma says), preparation - knowing the mountain and ice blackspots, how to avoid them (I'll ski a black rather than a busy, icy blue anyday), time of day etc etc. And then when we get to an icy patch each to their own on survival strategy. Mine is; speed control - if it's icy keep the speed down so I don't find myself arriving on an icy bit too fast. If I know I'm going to ski an icy piste, pause at the top and see what other people are doing - to avoid them!! My bete noir of ice is other people, so I'll wait a bit if necessary and find a gap so I don't get tangled up with others. Look for soft snow to turn on and check speed - sides of piste best. Finally; don't give a s*** what I look like, sideslipping, stopping, survival skiing - get past it and enjoy the next bit of good snow. It's all in the head - got to stay as relaxed as possible; locking up, stiffening legs and knees, "hanging" onto the hill, will all cause grief. Don't be scared of ice - coz fear is your killer. Just work out your own survival tactics! |

OK for three lunch stops I would suggest - Starter at La Bergerie; salads are excellent or their carpaccio of beef. Followed by the PDJ at the Tovets, with a glass of wine to suite. And then up the Verdons bubble for either a slice of tart or the chocolate mouse at the restaurant upstairs that I forget the name of but not the Verdons restaurant, the other one and a nice espresso, or digestif if you must ....... That'll sort ya! |

1650 report ...
I do like my lunches  In town - right opposite the escalator (piste finishes above resort level and there is an escalator down to the street in the building by the telecabine)- Schuss (I think) to left of Intersport anyway. Fun, friendly and great food - had a lovely PDJ for 12/13 euros. Up top, above 1650 2 choices. Bel Air, right by telecabine. Lovely restaurant, not silly prices but not cheap, very friendly. And just below it by the Signal chair (bottom of) le Casserole. Haven't eaten here for a few years, coffee/hot chocolate and a few cakes very tasty and not daft prices. This has been upgraded in the last few years, such a shame, but more so that the gorgeous, garulous, rude "Madame" who used to own it died. :( |

No - that was just the main course  Mind you I was there this year and, yes, a savoury crepe for 20 euros is a lot but I love the place. They are trying this year, as the number of Russians has plummeted. I noticed their Petrus was down from 5000 euros to 3500 euros. I think Courchevel, in huge generalities, is better value now than 3/4 years ago. |

Hi Andy,
Well you are spoiled for choice and I know what you mean by costs! There is a huge variation in cost across Courchevel and it doesn't always corespond with quality. Assuming you are down in 1850 there is a great Pizzeria (plus other things) down the road past Jean Blanc sports (landmark - neon sign at roof top height) by about 50m, this is to right of pistes as you come down to Croisette. At other end (of Croisette) is the Hotel Tovets, again good food not overpriced. Expensive but worth it is the Bergerie on the side of the Bellecote piste. If you want up the hill then I would recommend Soucoupe, top of Plantrey chair on Chenus/Loze. 1550 is better value, no specific recommends. Was your crepe at the Tremplin? :) right under all the bubbles in Croisette? Their signature dish at Christmas was a seafood platter retailing at 385 euros for 2 (and, no, I didn't, but saw the menu). Enjoy ...... |

I have no specific info. on ADH, but in many resorts the tourist office has free wifi - seen this several times with people with laptops on their knees doing whatever they do .....
