Prior to recent years' conflict Afganistan was one of the more progressive countries. In many of these countries religeous fundamentalism has been a relatively recent phenomenon. You never really heard the term until the revolution in Iran.

How about "I had to get special permission from my parole officer to to come away!"

As a rule of thumb few impacts between cars and pedestrians at less than 30mph are fatal however at 40 the odds are less in the padestrian's favour.
If you swap pedestrian for skier and car for snow canon - then the only difference is which is moving (& that's relative). Even relatively new skiers can hit 40mph when schussing and for an experienced skier not in the least out of the ordinary. But if you hit a stationary, immovable object the consequences can be catastrophic. As skiers it's a small but real risk we take that if things go wrong we might get injured or worse. Fortunately it's a rare event and our condolences to his loved ones safe in the knowlege he passed away doing something he enjoyed. |

That would be a difficult one to sell to your children:
"We're going on a skiing holiday, but you've got to go to school for half of it" The issue for most parents of older children is avoiding the many exam dates that have cropped up because of modular GCSEs & A levels (bring back proper exams in the summer I say) Trying to provide appropriate work for older children doing many courses under different exam boards may be a tall order. A week off school is no big deal (in the grand scheme of things) for those under say 14 years old so I guess as a parent I wouldn't have put my daughters into school when it's our family holiday. |

They certainly don't seem to groom as much in the Portes Du Soleil than the 3Vs, although the Swiss side of the Portes Du Soleil seemed to be more groomed than the French side on the two trips I've had there.
As to whether Blacks should be groomed or not is open to debate. I guess it's nice to have steep, smooth blacks as well as mogul fields to give some variety. Un-pisted blues - I would argue against. Ploughed up blues are a nightmare for inexperienced skiers that are no fun to ski on for anyone. The bumps stop new skiers from getting any flow and aren't steep enough to keep you going downhill. The blue to the Ardent bubble near Morzine being an example of a run is awful at the end of a day - soft & mogulled even if bashed the night before and even worse if they don't bash it for a couple of days. My impression is that the Austrians are perhaps more diligent groomers than the French. The Italians & the Andorrans also seem to bash more. |

Perhaps their routing still thinks the tunnel is closed!
It was closed after the accident & fire that prompted a number of alterations. it's been open for a few years now but perhaps Google forgot! I remember driving through it 14 or 15 years ago and thinking "what happens if there's an accident" - having driven in the Alps numerous times it was the only time I was genuinely concerned. Going through it to Cormayeur 2 years ago (this time on a ski bus) I barely recognised it and the huge volume of traffic that used to pass through. |
