We fly into Geneva next week and I have been trying to find a route to La Thuile in Italy. Google Maps send me a 253 km, 3 and a half hour trip around Switzerland and Italy. Why can't I go via France and through the Mont Blanc Tunnel? Has anyone done it via the tunnel is it very straight forward? Thanks.

Yep straight through the tunnel and set your sat nav to fastest route or up date the map

Strange one with Google
Never mind, use Via Michelin instead. http://www.viamichelin.com
Estimates your journey at 1 hr 47 mins and costing 88.67 EUR, but I think that is including the cost of a Swiss Vignette.

Perhaps their routing still thinks the tunnel is closed!
It was closed after the accident & fire that prompted a number of alterations. it's been open for a few years now but perhaps Google forgot!
I remember driving through it 14 or 15 years ago and thinking "what happens if there's an accident" - having driven in the Alps numerous times it was the only time I was genuinely concerned.
Going through it to Cormayeur 2 years ago (this time on a ski bus) I barely recognised it and the huge volume of traffic that used to pass through.

Mont Blanc Tunnel is the route, beware of the cameras and keep your distance (from experience)
From Geneva straight up the Autoroute Blache you cant miss the tunnel
