Ryanair is to put up the price of checked in luggage in peak periods to discourage its passengers from taking too much baggage.

In June, July, Aug, Sept and Christmas 2012, it will increase checked-in baggage fees from £20 to £25 per bag for all online bookings made from 15 Dec.

Ryanair will also increase its checked in bag fees paid at call centres and airports from £35 to £60 per bag.

In the low season, (October to May) online checked-in bag fees will remain unchanged at 15 per bag.

I read that as no change for this season, but I'm looking for the small print...
Hi Flipper - we've not been able to source a feed as yet, but will be adding more reported ski areas as the season progresses.
ATTENTION REGULARS

Mention of Helmets, Mayrhofen and Niederau should be confined to their own threads please.

It's all highly amusing but our (always welcome) newcomers are having their threads trashed and won't have a clue what you're all on about.

Show some respect for your fellow users please. Ta.

Admin's axe (oo err) will be falling without warning.
Nearest open skiing to Lyon.

Here you go, ...Snow in resorts within reach of Lyon

...but Tignes a good shout right now... 8)
Well, what a week that was?

Europe went from misery to delight as a succession of snowfalls crossed The Alps and turned green, dry slopes to powder fields. Major individual falls of 70cm have been reported from the Three Valleys to Scandinavia, with accumulations of over a metre across much of The Alps in the past 7 days. Snow is still falling in some parts.

Well over 50 European resorts will be open this coming weekend, with many more now confident of being fully open by the following weekend.

Across the Atlantic, ski areas in both Canada and the US were hit with yet more new snow. The Western regions of both countries currently have pretty epic conditions.

European Weather and Snow This Coming Week

Several days of relatively clear and settled weather are expected to bring superb skiing conditions to the open European resorts from now and into the weekend.

More snow is in the forecast after that, however, and the models are showing encouraging consistency in predicting a succession of further bands of snow over the next ten days or so.

Temperatures are generally down to, perhaps lower than, seasonal averages and seem likely to remain so.

Two words of caution - Avalanche Risk

Heavy snows falling onto bare, relatively warm, ground are going to take time to stabilise. Authorities in France and Switzerland have issued warnings in the past few days and the avalanche risk will be very high, on many slopes, for some time.

If you're in the mountains this week, please take extra care and seek local advice before leaving pisted runs.
Which of these should I hire?

This.

The Fischers I don't know, the Zenith I liked, but the Tornado Ti is IMHO one of the stand-out skis of recent years. Not to be confused with other variants of the X-Wing which, although decent skis, are not in the same league.

But that's just me; YMMV 8)
In light of yesterday's tragedy, considerable caution should be exercised on the new snow.

The Swiss authorities have issued a detailed avalanche bulletin here.

Although this bulletin specifically addresses Swiss locations, similar dangers are currently present throughout the Alpine area.

Avalanche danger forecast for Thursday

Northern flank of the Alps; Valais; Gotthard region; Flims; Calanda; northern Prättigau:

Considerable avalanche danger (Level 3)

The avalanche prone locations are to be found particularly on wind loaded slopes in all expositions. In southern Valais and in the Gotthard region, the danger zones are found above approximately 2200 m; elsewhere above approximately 1800 m. The freshly formed snowdrift accumulations can be easily triggered even by a single backcountry skier or freerider. They should be avoided, even when there is hardly any snow just adjacent to them. During the night in particular, naturally triggered avalanches are also expected. Especially in northern Lower Valais, in Chablais and in the Vaud Alps, these avalanches will often attain medium size. Skiing and freeriding in outlying terrain away from secured ski runs necessitates a great deal of experience in evaluating avalanche dangers.

Remaining regions of Grisons; central and northern Ticino not including Gotthard region:

Moderate avalanche danger (Level 2)

The avalanche prone locations are to be found particularly on wind loaded slopes in northwestern to northern to southern exposition above approximately 2400 m. The freshly formed snowdrift accumulations are generally small sized, but can be easily triggered. They should be avoided whenever possible. With ascending altitude, the number and the size of avalanche prone locations increase.

Trend for Friday and Saturday

On Friday morning in northern regions it is expected to be quite sunny. Thereafter, clouds will move in and by Saturday evening some snowfall is expected. The snowfall level will descend from 1500 down to 1000 m. In the Valais and in southern regions, it will be partly sunny on both days. The westerly wind will be blowing at strong velocity. The avalanche danger will recede on Friday. On Saturday, it may increase slightly in northern regions.

Our highlighting above - enjoy, but take care.
As they're showing some pretty wonderful scenes at the moment, we thought we'd add a few more... so there are now another 300-ish webcams showing on our pages.

With thanks to our new friends, the very lovely people at Feratel, some of our web cam selections now include their awesome panoramic cameras.
