Hey guys, I'm the first vote for "always" :!:
I live in an area (Nova Scotia) where the meaning of "free world" is slipping day by day, or at least changing to "you do what the government tells you to do - or we will fine you". The politicians decided (based on useless advice from the medical people) it was best for "us" to be forced to wear bicycle helmets when on a bike. (I'd like to say to them "on your bike"!) So I stopped riding my bike. It has cost me a loss of fitness level. When I took up skiing I decided for myself that a helmet was potentially wise move - so I went with that. There have been a few occasions in which this was proven to be a wise move indeed. The helmet provides a good location for storing the goggles. It also has a warming effect and has saved me from a few headaches. I expect in a very few years the Canadian government will force a helmet law upon us and in thinking of this I'm glad I have already accepted the "brain bucket". I certainly wouldn't want to give up skiing. I'm certainly not one of those people who "attack" helmet-less people on the chair lift and preach the use of helmets. Everyone should have the choice  Mike  |

Pavel... isn't it nice to see everyone excited because of your quiz! To answer a couple of your unrelated questions ... My shotgun is missing so I must offer a one (as per the rules of engagement)shot blast as close to the target(s) .. all 10 at once... as I can. No wonder the nights are sleepless. - so I am contemplating my reply very carefully.
It is all in the flex due to structural alignment of the longitudinal fibers of the materials. That is to say the "softer" the ski the more radical the curve we can induce with applied pressure and therefore the fun whipping sensation of the carve. One of those magic numbers we should know which you listed. Another was our boot's sole length ... but I must put this in my final one time answer. Don't be concerned Jan ... I am in the wings or maybe on the "wings of a dove" or whatever. Has anyone else noticed that this quiz is one of Pavel's toughest quizzes?? Or maybe I am just in the lowest part of the non-snowy part of the ski season. Just think how much learning we are all doing with this one :!: That first picture isn't a Lego reject?? Or maybe a drill bit holder for the different screw sizes where a starter hole need be drilled. Mike  |

Sleepless nights indeed .... and not just form this set of questions. It has been so hot and humid at night here that the nights are sleepless.
This is a difficult set of questions and I thought the Lego block answer was pretty good :!: It wouldn't be the first time that Pavel had adapted something complete unrelated to skiing into being a main tool for tuning or buckle fastening. I too haven't yet given proper consideration to coming up with a set of answers ... and now I see that Pavel says we will be once more slapping our foreheads :!: :!: . But Pavel, the headaches are just about gone from the forehead slapping from the last time. One thing that came to mind when reading the questions was the common use of layered kevlar in some ski bases as with some sports car construction. (Just a guess.) But numbers have come back to bite us again. Hmmmmm ... and not on google??? I'm in trouble then  I must settle down and give some serious thought to what Lego could be used for in skiing.... Mike  |

Hirsty,
I think that's a good observation about the velcro strap. Trencher, I could watch your video of those great curves for hours! Your style is so flowing. :-) What was the temperature on the day they video was made? Was the snow springtime snow - these doesn't seem to be a lot of flying powder. So we are about to begin the sleepless nights now with the dawn of Pavel's quiz!! Mike  |

Yes Hirsty, Pavel's quizzes are all very exciting --- and not just because we always learn from them :!: I really have taken to the sleepless nights they bring on us :!:  Better get some rest before Pavel posts the questions..... Mike  |

Certainly, not as cold :!:   |

I guess Tony really enjoys being "one" with nature ! I bet that was a rush :!:  Oh -- there are some stories that could be told here..... But there is no doubt a straight forward explanation for Louise's comment .... Be careful what we take out of context for the sake of "good" sport  Mike  |

ellistine,
Have you named your boat yet ?? I have a little story about a sailing boat which sailed from the UK to Nova Scotia in 1930. It was a ketch called "Seaplane". The story is that the owner, G.F.G. Plooard was planning a trip to the US to take part in a race from Boston to Halifax. He was in a pub talking up his plans and searching for a couple of crew mates. Anyway, he ended up in Bedford Basin which today can be seen in this web cam site:http://cam.artmosher.ca/ Maybe "Seaplane" may be a name to consider. There is more to the story which I'll send you via PM. Mike  |
