New skier, hope to go this winter!

If you fancy trying Italy, take a look at Folgarida. It is a very small quiet village in the Dolomites near Madonna, but it is good for beginners because there are a couple of nursery slopes which are not part of another run so you can learn and practice and gain confidence without the usual idiots hurtling down at speed knocking you over! Beginners we have taken there, in their late teens/early twenties, have skied the long blue back into the village by the end of the second day and done a few of the reds by the end of the week.

In France, Alpe d'Huez might fit the bill with its central bowl of nursery/green slopes.

I think Colletts might be offering 10 day deals to Corvara next January.

We really enjoy the Lech area and one of my favourite runs is part of the Weisse Ring. At the top of the Rufikopf cable car is a long cruisey blue (down to a T-bar), off which are fantastic views. I would say you should ski the ring at least once while you are there just to say you have done it!
Above Lech/Oberlech, my favourite run is red 35 off the Rotschrofen chair which is best skied fast and straight onto the chairlift for another blast :D
Another cruisey blue worth doing is blue 8 from St. Anton down to St. Christoph so you can sit on the sun terrace of the Hospizalm for a drink and then use their 'facilities' where you will find either steps or an alternative method of descent! (I will leave you to find out what that is)
Enjoy :D

Hello Alistair - we haven't stayed in Zug itself but in Lech and have skied down to Zug as part of the Weisse Ring. The red ski route down to Zug is not exactly my favourite run I have to say -part of it is an uphill slog and by the time I reach the chairlift down in Zug all I want is a hot drink! Fortunately, there is an excellent cafe at the top of the chair.
The local buses have always been reliable when we have used them.
One of our favourite lunchtime stops was the terrace of the Burgwald Hotel on a blue run in Oberlech, but the standard of service and food is generally very good anywhere in the Lech area.

Agree with Tony re Serre Chevalier. We have been there five times now with a mix of family/friends/teenagers/twentysomethings/thirtysomethings/over fifties/over sixties/over seventies/beginners/boarders/skiers/ only ski in the morning and then go sightseeing/shopping/vist the spa in the afternoon.
In other words, it has something for everyone! Good value too.

I fancy trying a ski-thru takeaway. Could be messy?

We have been so lucky this ski season - fantastic pre-Christmas week in the 3 Valleys, superb first week of January in Obergurgl and then first week of March in Serre Chevalier.

We also backed the first and second in the National last Saturday
:D :D :D
Great report Alistair - can't believe how different the pass looked just a couple of hours after we drove over it!
