I've used nikwax technical wash and the direct wash-in product many times and it seems to work really weel for me. Slight odour (but better than before the wash !).
I've had varying degrees of success with "black oil" and paint. I think the oil is primarily drips from the lifts (most pomas ?) you also see to get some degradation of the black rubber/plastic "seats" which is a real pain on white salopettes. I ended up using a variety of washing liquids (fairy, persil, you name it) rubbed directly onto the stains, washed the gear and then reproofed it... not all of the stain came out... and they were still repellant (maybe something to do with the odour ? :p ] [please note - i'm no expert in this! and I wasn't too worried as the salopettes cost <£20 new and were about 3 seasons old] |

another thought ?
have you parents (or good friends) who you would consider leaving the newbie with for a week ? otherwise - as IW says - the local provisions have proved pretty good in (french & swiss) resorts I've visited with kids.. language won't be a problem for the youngster ! |

yes, I agree. It seems a waste of money..but SH*t can happen. In all my years of skiing I've never made a claim (hope that saying this isn't bad luck !). People in our group have found their insurance to pay out. One for a burnt jacket (flaming torch) and one for a mountain rescue following a fall (fortunately was less severe than initially thought).
Thought I might have to use the rescue service at Easter when my youngest fell..fortunately a passing Austrian Doctor was able to give her the all clear.... [note to all :- check that the hire shop have adjusted the ski binding to the boot correctly before skiing] |

oh and.... the EHIC only lasts 5 years. If you got yours when it changed from E111 then it's out of date !!

the comments on people dropping out are bang on. If this happens you can get landed with under occupancy charges. Better to give a refund (or team T-shirt) in resort than to have to go around asking for a top up. There may be operators who deal with large groups in a different way to the norm so worth looking into ? I think I'd agree with the comments on catering. half board or club hotel/chalet can make life easier (don't underestimate the cost of eating out if you end up in major French resorts).
hopefully of help. |
