Why not take the TGV from Paris to Oulx and do the Milky Way. Big area about, 400kms with lots of varied runs and all manicured the "Italian way". Italian prices and great food and Sauze is not the big party town it used to be. With Sestriere, Claviere, Sansicario, Montgenevre and Pragaleto all on the same pass and a days option for Serre Chevalier, L2A and Alpe D'Huez I reckon its a good bet at that time of year. There is lots of accom available but prob not to may chalets.Somewhere near the Clotes area may well be ski in/out if you are lucky (Hotel Hermitage is anyway)

We looked at this place to take our school. Pragelato has its own runs, a few blues and reds, and was informed by the ski company there is now a gondola joining it to Sestriere but I can't find it shown on any documentation or piste map. Tried Google earth but could not see it. Of course the MW is extensive as long as its open because the area has an iffy snow record and is not extensively covered with snow cannons. Sestriere should be ok though as its one of the higher bits. The runs down to Claviere and hence onward to Montgenevre are sometimes shut due to no snow and the lower slopes of Sauze can be a bit barren of the white stuff! I believe you can get a local pass for Sestriere (about 80kms) if you wish to keep costs down but to be honest the difference between that and a full pass is quite small for the extra 320kms.

We went to La Thuile last Feb half term. It was really quiet and the area was a pleasure to ski in. As normal for Italian resorts the pistes were immaculate and even when you went to La Rosiere the quality on the French side was still good. The runs around La Thuile are mostly reds and blues but are on the easy side. However reds 4 and 6....the only ways back to resort other than black 2 and 3 can be tricky with red 6 quite narrow and steep in places. Black 2 is really quite steep...73%...according to the piste map....it certainly looked that steep standing at the top of it. Blacks 35 and 36 into the village are really only just blacks but do look quite intimidating from the bottom. The runs to the left of resort..red 36 etc were almost deserted and great fun
As said before the transit back from La Rosiere is more difficult than getting there, the red into the Petit St Bernard Pass can be icy and is quite narrow. As its the only way to ski back it can be busy. There are 2 routes from there but both require long drag lifts. Its certainly do-able but cold when you are tired. The left red(4 I think)is the summer road to La Rosiere and is an easy run 'till you get close to the village when it is joined by black 3. The othere way brings you back to the upper slopes of a Thuile which still means you have to transit back to base via red 4 or 6 or blacks 2 and 3. Prices and food is Italian....certainly cheaper than La Rosiere and the service less sultry!! La Thuile is a 2 part village really with the purpose built new part right on piste with learner/childrens slopes close. The old village has charm. There are a few pubs and clubs but if you are looking for a hectic night life go elsewhere I am considering going again this year as it was so enjoyable :) |
